Description

An asset like this does not come around often. It features the most-awarded gospel instrumentalist of all-time, Ben Tankard, and offers the unique opportunity to collect both songwriter and publisher earnings from his extensive back catalog. Included in this collection are multi-Grammy nominated tracks and a heavily decorated repertoire of classic, smooth-jazz/gospel hits.

The top earner for this collection is “Sunday Vibes” from Tankard’s Grammy-nominated album Tank. The album appeared on Billboard’s Top Sellers Chart in multiple categories – jazz, gospel & southern gospel. The song contributed to 17% of earnings in the last 12 months. Additional tracks from the album included in this collection are “Higher Groove,” “Morning Prayer,” “I Ain’t Blue” and more.

Most notably, one of this collection’s oldest tracks —“Lakeside Cabin”— also has the highest growth rate in the last 12 months, at nearly 40%. Released in 2007, it’s rare to see a track over 10 years of age showing such impressive growth. The remaining top contributors for this collection include multiple tracks off of Full Tank 2.0 including “Rainy Sunday” and “Right Turn Ahead.” Collectively the tracks contribute 19% of this collections earnings in the last 12 months.

Key Drivers

Song Age. This catalog contains music with release dates dating back to 2007. This provides a diverse income mix between new(er) releases and more mature works. Industrywide, "Deep Catalog" titles (those released more than three years ago) accounted for 55% of all album sales in 2018, up from 51% in 2017

This collection of songs aligns with this trend. The highest-earning tracks include — “Lakeside Cabin” and “Heavenly Vibes”— which were released in 2007 and 2009, respectively. A catalog containing more mature works is something worth noting as an investor.

Radio. Radio is the largest source of revenue for this catalog, accounting for 53% of historic royalties. Although radio royalties are still being generated, they could eventually level off. Typically, songs that experience significant radio play can often build a foundation for other types of income.

Case in point: streaming. Historically, streaming brought in 10% of royalties. In the last 12 months, however, streaming accounted for 38% of royalties. Streaming royalties are also seeing a 7% increase over the last 12 months. So as we're seeing as the radio royalties begin to slow down, other income sources (streaming) begin to increase.

Sirius XM. The Copyright Royalty Board (CRB) recently increased the rates Sirius XM must pay rights-holders by more than 40% over the next five years, from 11% of revenue to 15.5% of revenue, effective January 1, 2018. This catalog earns 21% from Sirius XM historically. As the winner of this auction, you can benefit from these rate increases as you collect royalties for the next 10 years.

New Music. Ben Tankard just recently released a new album Rise! in September 2018. While the new songs are not included in this auction, new releases can help boost an artist's back catalog. The release of new music draws discovery among first-time listeners and re-engages existing fans. In fact, the new album is currently No. 3 on the Billboard Smooth Jazz National Airplay chart… and on the rise.
