Up for auction is the Platinum track “Ooh Ahh” and “Ooh Ahh Remix” from the Christian hip-hop group GRITS featuring TobyMac. With an impressive dollar age of 16.73 years, this collection has earned consistently for nearly two decades.

“Ooh Ahh” is notably recognized for multiple TV appearances on the popular network, MTV. The track appeared in both My Super Sweet Sixteen, and The Buried Life, serving as the theme song to the latter. “Ooh Ahh” appears on the soundtrack for the films The Fast and The Furious: Tokyo Drift and Big Momma's House 2. TV/Film royalties for this collection are growing, up 38% over the previous 12 month period. Currently, they make up about 10% of recent earnings.

It’s worth noting, GRITS released an Ooh Ahh EP in 2007 that features both songs included in this auction – "Ooh Ahh" and "Ooh Ahh Remix.” Additionally, "Ooh Ahh" appeared on the 2007 GRITS’ album, The Greatest Hits.

Key Drivers

Dollar Age. This catalog has a Dollar Age of 16.73. This means the majority of royalties earned in the last 12 months came from songs that have collected royalties for more than sixteen years. A high Dollar Age like this suggests stability and longevity.

“Ooh Ahh” and “Ooh Ahh Remix” were released in 2002 and royalties continue to remain consistent thanks to steady streaming and international income as well as growing TV/film royalties. A catalog containing mature works with consistent (and even growing earnings) is something worth noting as an investor. This can help sustain a catalog's earnings moving forward.

Hip-Hop/Streaming. This catalog is a perfect example of two trends: hip-hop and streaming's growth worldwide. According to BuzzAngle's 2018 Year End Report, hip-hop is the most popular genre of music in the U.S. The driver for the increase is streaming. Hip-hop/rap tracks accounted for more than a quarter of all on-demand plays on music streaming services in the US in 2018. Streaming accounts for over half of this catalog’s earnings over the last 12 months.

International. The majority of this catalog’s earnings come from abroad — at nearly a third of historical earnings. Although international royalty distribution can lag behind domestic payments and arrive with limited detail, as the winner of this auction you’ll be entitled to any past performance royalties paid by BMI, regardless of when they were earned.

As this collection earns primarily from countries outside the United States, it’s important to note that international earnings can often be reported to distributors with limited detail. These international earnings often include income from radio, streaming platforms, and TV/Film.

TV/Film. This catalog benefits from placements in TV/Film, contributing to nearly a third of this catalog's historic earnings. The track “Ooh Ahh” earns from a placement in The Fast and The Furious: Tokyo Drift as well as multiple MTV placements. Every time The Fast and The Furious: Tokyo Drift plays on TV, a royalty is generated for “Ooh Ahh." As the winner of this auction, you'll collect the performance royalties for any of the songs' use in TV/Film.
