Description

With over 300 tracks spanning 20 years, this catalog earns royalties from some of the most critically-acclaimed hip-hop artists today: Talib Kweli, Kanye WestA Tribe Called QuestCommon, and more.

This collection has incredible diversity among its income distribution and song age. Release dates for income-producing songs range from 1997 to 2016, while the highest-earning song only accounts for 17% of last year’s income. This means you’re not tied to the success of a single title and there is built-in diversity from the mix of older and newer releases.

The catalog’s income sources are also seeing year-over-year growth in five of the top six income categories, which is rather impressive! International royalties from upwards of 60 countries lead the way with 32% of last year’s royalties. Right behind, are domestic streaming earnings (31%) with Spotify as the highest contributing platform.

Perhaps the most well-known (and the highest-earning) track is “Get By” performed by Talib Kweli, bringing in 19% historic income. Released in 2003, “Get By” is off Talib Kweli’s debut solo album Quality. What’s impressive is over 15 years after its release the song is still generating consistent royalties — in fact, it saw a 6% increase last year compared to the previous year.

Also included is “I Try” from Talib Kweli featuring Mary J Blige. The 2004 release brings in 9% of historic income. The third highest-earning title to date is “Blast” from Reflection Eternal's 2001 album. There is also “Get Em High” from Kanye West, Talib Kweli and Common, along with “Definition” from Black Star’s 1999 critically-acclaimed album Mos Def & Talib Kweli Are Black Star.

The newer releases featured in this collection are also noteworthy. Bringing in 5% of last year’s income is “The Dreamer” from Anderson Paak featuring Talib Kweli. Finally, there is A Tribe Called Quest’s “The Killing Season” from the group’s 2016 album.

Key Drivers

Hip-Hop and Streaming. According to BuzzAngle's 2018 Year End Report, hip-hop is the most popular genre of music in the U.S. The driver for the increase is streaming. Hip-hop/rap tracks accounted for more than a quarter of all on-demand plays on music streaming services in the US in 2018. You can benefit from this rise in hip-hop as a genre on streaming platforms with this classic hip-hop catalog.

Song Age. This catalog contains music with release dates dating back to 1997. This provides a diverse income mix between new(er) releases and more mature works. Based on the recent BuzzAngle Music report, “Deep Catalog” (music released more than 3 years ago) represents 50% of music streamed today.

This collection of songs aligns with this trend. The five highest-earning tracks in the last year have release dates spanning from 2001 to 2016. A catalog containing a mix of mature works and newer releases is something worth noting as an investor. This diversity can help sustain a catalog's streaming earnings moving forward.

TV/Film Placements. This catalog benefits from placements in TV/Film, contributing to over 29% of this catalog's historic earnings. Over 100 songs have benefitted from placements across well-known programs including: “My Favorite Mutiny” is featured in 2007’s Superbad. Every time Superbad plays on TV, a royalty is generated for “My Favorite Mutiny.” As the winner of this auction, you'll collect the performance royalties for any of the songs' use in TV/Film.
