Up for auction is the 2X platinum Fetty Wap hit, “My Way.” Released in 2015, "My Way" debuted at No. 98 on the Billboard Hot 100. Less than three weeks later, "My Way" jumped 80 positions from No. 87 to No. 7, boasting impressive sales and 6.6 million domestic streams. Since then, the track has now racked up well over 188 million spins on YouTube and nearly 226 million plays on Spotify.
Historically, “My Way” earned the majority of its earnings through radio sources, contributing to nearly half of all-time earnings. Though, in recent years, earnings have pivoted in favor of streaming and international sources, making up 41% and 42% respectively. The majority of earnings collected internationally derived in the United Kingdom, Germany, France, and Canada, among others.
Fetty Wap is currently on a European tour with dates through September 2019 which should continue to support stability in International earnings for the upcoming royalty year. Tours give artists the chance to solidify their current fan base and expand their reach to new listeners. Fetty Wap is known to include the track “My Way” in his live performances.
Hip-Hop/Streaming. This catalog is a perfect example of two trends: hip-hop and streaming's growth worldwide. According to BuzzAngle's 2018 Year-End Report, hip-hop is the most popular genre of music in the U.S. The driver for the increase is streaming. Hip-hop/rap tracks accounted for more than a quarter of all on-demand plays on music streaming services in the US in 2018. Streaming accounts for 41% of this catalog’s earnings over the last 12 months, up from 27% historically.
Radio. Radio is the largest source of revenue for this catalog historically, accounting for 45% of historic royalties. Although radio royalties are still being generated, they could eventually level off. Typically, songs that experience significant radio play can often build a foundation for other types of income.
Case in point: streaming. Historically, streaming brought in 27% of royalties. In the last 12 months, however, streaming accounted for 41% of royalties. So as we're seeing the radio royalties begin to slow down, other income sources (streaming) begin to increase.
International. The majority of this catalog’s recent earnings come from abroad — at 42% in the last 12 months alone. As the winner of this auction, you’ll be entitled to any past performance royalties paid by BMI, regardless of when they were earned. As this collection earns primarily from countries outside the United States, it’s important to note that international earnings can often be reported to distributors with limited detail. These international earnings often include income from radio, streaming platforms, and TV/Film.
