Description

This catalog offers sound recording royalties generated by two songs from Meghan Trainor’s multi-Platinum debut album Title.

The highlight is the hit “Like I’m Gonna Lose You” performed by Meghan Trainor featuring soulful R&B artist John Legend. The quadruple-Platinum single brought in 89% of this collection’s income over the last year. Released in 2015, “Like I’m Gonna Lose You” charted impressively both in the U.S. and abroad — hitting No.1 on the Billboard Top 40, No. 8 on Billboard’s Hot 100, and charting in 15 other countries. The song has an impressive 420+ million spins on Spotify (making it Trainor’s second most popular song on the platform), while the music video has over 530 million views on YouTube.

Also included in this offering is the title “3am” from Meghan Trainor (also off the album Title), bringing in 7% of last year’s income. As the winning bidder, you’ll earn income from sales of the album Title itself, since both included titles are off the album, which accounted for 2% of last year’s royalties.

This collection earns primarily from streaming sources, with 74% of earnings in the last 12 months. Spotify leads the way with a third the catalog’s total royalties last year and is also seeing growth with a 9% increase over the previous time period. Pandora and YouTube are also growing compared to the previous 12 months. It’s worth noting that both the top-earning type of royalties (streaming) and top-earning song (“Like I’m Gonna Lose You”) saw the best year-over-year stability.

Key Drivers

Multiple Income Streams. The winner of this auction can receive income from various royalty streams. Like composition/publishing royalties, sound recording royalties are due royalties for different types of uses. They include:

  • Sales: Royalties paid to artists and producers when a recording is sold, which can be downloaded (on a platform like iTunes), as well as physical copies being sold (such as a C.D.).

  • Streaming: Royalties paid to artists and producers when a recording is streamed “on-demand” (like Spotify for example) as well as non-interactive streaming (Pandora).

  • Synchronization: Royalties paid to artists and producers for the licensing of a recording in music for a movie, TV show, or commercial.

Sound Recording & Streaming. As we’ve come to know, streaming is booming worldwide, and record labels are seeing significant benefits as a result. You can see this trend reflected in the catalog up for auction. In the last year, 74% of royalties came from streaming services alone. This is good news for you as the investor, as it follows the industry macro trend of rising label streaming royalties.

According to an analysis of publicly-stated financial results by Music Business Worldwide, labels Universal, Sony and Warner jointly turned over just above $6 billion — approximately $1 billion a month — between them in the first half of 2018 on a global basis. Streaming contributed over half this total, with over $3 billion in the same period.

Featured Artist. Not surprisingly, the artists attached to this collection are a big draw. Meghan Trainor is a rising artist with a large fan base. She won the Best New Artist Grammy at 58th Annual Grammy Awards and her retro-style continues to gain fans. Not to mention the featured artist on “Like I’m Gonna Lose You” — John Legend — is a multi-Grammy Award winner and has an Oscar, Tony, and Emmy to his name.

Meghan Trainor is also slated to release her third studio album Treat Myself very soon. While the new songs on the much-anticipated album are not included in this auction, new releases can help boost an artist's back catalog. The release of new music draws discovery among first-time listeners and re-engages existing fans.
