This auction features two separate catalogs from the alternative rock band Anarbor. As the winning bidder, you’ll collect sales and streaming royalties from the band’s independent releases. You’ll also receive royalties from the sales, streaming and sync rights to their label releases produced by Hopeless Records. Between the two catalogs, earnings were $15,455 over the last 12 months.
Originally formed in 2003 while the band members were in middle school, Anarbor was signed to Hopeless Records in 2008. The first catalog in this sale contains the band’s oldest works during their time with the label. This collection of songs has more of a pop-punk sound and its royalties increased an impressive 44% in the last year.
Part of the Hopeless Records catalog is the title “18,” which is the band’s most popular song to-date with over five million spins on Spotify. “18” is also the highest-earning song on the label side with 14% of royalties in the last 12 months. Also included in this catalog is Anarbor’s first full-length studio album The Words You Don't Swallow, which peaked at No. 50 on Billboard's Independent Albums chart.
In 2016, Anarbor released an independent self-titled album Anarbor with a more alternative pop sound. These royalties are distributed through TuneCore and have seen a steady increase over the last year. Not surprisingly, streaming dominates this catalog’s income with 87% of royalties over the last 12 months. The top-earning single from the album is “Can’t Help It” with 26% of earnings last year.
Streaming & Rock. According to BuzzAngles 2017 Music Report, rock titles were the second-most streamed songs at 19.3% (including Rock, Alternative, Metal, Indie Rock, Punk). This catalog’s music is classified as alternative rock and streaming is a significant contributor to its income.
With regards to the TuneCore catalog, streaming is the largest source of royalties with 87% of the earnings in the last 12 months. On the label side, there is a noticeable shift in streaming income sources in the last 12 months. Historically, Spotify accounted for 16% of royalties but in the last year, that percentage jumped to nearly 40%. The growth in streaming industry-wide aligns with this collection and its earnings.
What's more is on-demand stream activity industry-wide is up 58.7 %. Streaming makes up 41% of total listening activity, making it the preferred listening format for all music consumers. With streaming as the primary income source for this asset, the streaming surge across the music industry bodes well for you as an investor.
New Album Release. Anarbor is currently working on another independent album, slated to be released later in 2018. For a band, a new release can help reinvigorate their back catalog, like the music offered in this auction. New works can draw interest from first-time listeners and reignite existing fans' interest in the band.
What is being sold?
50% of the seller's interest in the sales, streaming, and all royalties (except synchronization and non-interactive digital performance royalties collected by SoundExchange) attributable to the sound recordings listed on the TuneCore tracklist in the Financials tab; and 75% of Seller's interest in all royalties attributable to the sound recordings listed on the Hopeless Records tracklist on the documents tab.
How does this asset make money?
