Up for auction are publishing earnings generated by a catalog of songs from the late Swedish DJ/producer Avicii.
The winning bidder will collect from three types of royalties: mechanical, public performance, and sync for the next ten years.
Public performance royalties drove 73% of last year’s returns and 71% of the catalog’s lifetime royalties. Mechanical earnings brought in 23% of earnings over the last year.
The top-producing song — “Without You” — anchors this collection with 78% of royalties in the last 12 months.
You’ll notice a spike in international earnings in H2-2019. This is because Sony/ATV made a one-time change in how it distributes foreign earnings (in this case earnings outside of Scandinavia) during that period. Foreign earnings in H2-2019 included 12 months of royalties as opposed to 6 months. This was to “catch up” and pay foreign earnings on the same schedule as domestic earnings. Going forward, the winning bidder will receive six months of foreign earnings on each biannual statement.
ABOUT THE CATALOG:
The top track in this catalog is “Without You” from Avicii featuring Swedish vocalist Sandro Cavazza. “Without You” was the lead single on Avicii’s fourth EP Avici (01) released in August 2017. The album was well-received by critics and fans, charting in 14 countries, notably going No. 1 in Sweden and No. 2 on Billboard’s Top Dance/Electronic Albums.
“Without You” was Avicii's seventh Swedish No. 1 single, reaching No. 1 upon release in 2017 and again after Avicii's death in April 2018. The track also charted well in 28 counties, reaching No. 1 in five countries and was Gold-certified or better in 11 countries. To date, the song has a staggering 608+ million spins on Spotify.
The catalog also includes “Sunset Jesus” and “Gonna Love Ya” and from Avicii’s 2015 album Stories, with the latter boasting continued year-over-year growth.
Rounding out the top titles is “Don’t Hold Me” and “Cataleya” from Swedish singer Sandro Cavazza.
Income Mix. The winner of this auction can receive income in various ways:
- Mechanical: Royalties paid to songwriters and publishers when music is sold (think CD or vinyl) but also when music is streamed (streaming mechanicals) “on-demand” (like Spotify).
- Performance: Royalties paid to songwriters when music is performed publicly. Music played over the radio, in a restaurant or bar, or over a service like Spotify or Pandora is considered a public performance.
- Synchronization: Royalties paid to songwriters and publishers for the licensing of a song in music for a movie, TV show, or commercial.
Streaming Growth Worldwide. According to IFPI’S Global Music Report 2019, streaming revenues were up 34% in 2018, accounting for nearly half (47%) of total recorded music revenues. By the end of 2018, there were 255 million users of paid subscription accounts globally.
This seller's publisher holds a matching right on any sale of the income generated by this catalog. The publisher will have the opportunity to match the winning bid after this auction closes. If you are the winning bidder, the publisher must first decline their matching right before you will be able to complete your purchase.
