Description

This auction is for the individual track “Can’t Be Touched’ from Roy Jones Jr. group the Body Head Bangerz. In the last 12 months alone, streaming earnings grew nearly 82% over the preceding year. What is most interesting is “Can’t Be Touched” was released well over a decade ago and continues to show this significant growth.

In 2004, the track released to the Body Head Bangerz self-titled debut album Body Head Bangerz: Volume 1. Following its release, the album debuted within the top 50 for Billboard Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums. Produced by 1994 Fighter of the Year Roy Jones Jr., the track is one of the most notable “pump up” anthems from the boxer.

Key Drivers

Hip-Hop/Streaming. This catalog is a perfect example of two trends: hip-hop and streaming's growth worldwide. Hip-hop overtook rock in 2017 as the most popular genre of music in the U.S. and now accounts for 31% of all music consumption. The driver for the increase is streaming.

According to Rolling Stone, total consumption of Urban songs (Hip-Hop/Rap and R&B) by both streams and sales grew by 18% in the first half of 2018. Streaming accounts for 89% of this catalog’s earnings over the last 12 months and these earnings are up over 82% in the same period.

Song Age. “Can’t Be Touched” was released over a decade ago in 2004. Industrywide, “Catalog Songs” (music released more than 18 months ago) and “Deep Catalog” (music released more than 3 years ago) together represent over 60% of music streamed today. This collection of songs aligns with this trend, as “Can’t Be Touched” was released nearly 15 years ago and continues to show significant streaming growth today. A catalog containing more mature works is something worth noting as an investor.

International. The good portion of this catalog’s earnings come from abroad — at 25% of historical earnings. Although international royalty distribution can lag behind domestic payments and arrive with limited detail, as the winner of this auction you’ll be entitled to any past performance royalties paid by ASCAP, regardless of when they were earned.
