Opportunities to collect royalties generated by an incredibly popular new release from a massively popular artist don’t come around often. Well, here’s your chance! Up for bid here are public performance royalties from Cardi B’s 7x Platinum global smash “Bodak Yellow.”
Officially released in June 2017, “Bodak Yellow” was the lead single from Cardi B’s debut studio album Invasion of Privacy. The record-breaking, chart-topping hit put Cardi B on the map and helped her become one of the most popular artists of 2018. “Bodak Yellow” was also nominated for Best Rap Performance and Best Rap Song at the 60th Annual Grammy Awards.
Earnings for the song are just beginning since the song was released just over a year ago. Interestingly, streaming is the leading income source with 48% of earnings thus far. Radio royalties are right behind (44%) and should continue to flow thanks to widespread and continuous airplay. (Usually, radio airplay leads public performance royalty earnings, which is then replaced by streaming as radio gradually declines.)
What’s really exciting is that international royalties are just beginning to trickle in for “Bodak Yellow.” For the three reported quarters, international royalties only account for 3% of income. International royalty distribution lags behind domestic payments and is paid to the U.S. distributor (in this case BMI) with varied frequency. As the winner of this auction, you’ll be entitled to all royalties — including the international earnings that have yet to be disbursed.
To date, “Bodak Yellow” has a staggering 440+ million spins on Spotify, while the video has nearly 700 million plays on YouTube alone. “Bodak Yellow” also topped Billboard’s Hot 100 for three consecutive weeks — making it the longest-running No. 1 single by a solo female rapper. Also included in this collection is “Lick” from Cardi B featuring Offset, which is off a mixtape prior to Cardi B’s major label signing.
Cardi B. To say Cardi B is an enormously popular artist is an understatement. She's a trailblazer for female hip-hop artists with a global following. In a short time, Cardi B has earned three No.1 singles on the Billboard Hot 100, while "Bodak Yellow" made her the second female rapper to top the chart with a solo output — following Lauryn Hill in 1998.
At one point in 2018, Cardi B had five Top 10 singles on Billboard’s Hot R&B/Hip-Hop at the same time, making her the first woman to do so, beating Beyoncé’s previous record of four. Cardi’s album Invasion Of Privacy (which features “Bodak Yellow”) was the first debut album by a female rapper to get an Album of the Year Grammy nomination in nearly 20 years. Invasion Of Privacy also recently took the No. 1 slot on Rolling Stone's "50 Best Albums of 2018."
She has received seven Grammy Award nominations, three American Music Awards, three MTV Video Music Awards, nine BET Hip Hop Awards, and a Billboard Music Award.
International Earnings. Royalties for “Bodak Yellow” are only just beginning to be paid from foreign countries. International royalty distribution can lag behind domestic payments and to date, only 3% of the song’s earnings have come from abroad. “Bodak Yellow” was a global smash, charting in upwards of 15 countries. As the winner of this auction, you’ll be entitled to all international royalties paid out by the distributor for the 10 Year term.
Hip-Hop & Streaming. Hip-hop overtook rock in 2017 as the most popular genre of music in the U.S. In the first half of 2018, it accounted for 31% of all music consumption. According to the Nielsen report, total consumption of Urban songs (Hip-Hop/Rap and R&B) grew by 18% in both sales and streams.
This catalog is a perfect example of these two trends: hip-hop’s and streaming's growth worldwide. Streaming accounts for 48% of the offering’s earnings to date.
