This “Life of Rights” auction features a diverse selection of electronic tracks dating back to early 2012.

The top-earning track for this catalog is “Hourglass” from multi-platinum Grammy-winner Zedd. In the last 12 months alone, “Hourglass” contributed to over 40% of this collection’s earnings. In 2019, Billboard named Zedd the No. 4 dance musician of the year. He currently claims over 22 million monthly listeners on Spotify and throughout his career has received awards and nominations from countless organizations including Billboard, MTV, ASCAP and more.

Following closely behind in earnings is Diplo’s “Set Me Free,” contributing to over a third of recent earnings. Diplo is a multi-platinum 3X Grammy-winner and recently Billboard named Diplo the No. 7 dance musician of the year. Currently, he has more than 34 million monthly Spotify listeners.

Lastly, featuring innovative British electronic producer and DJ, Rusko, the track “Opium” makes up nearly a quarter of recent earnings for this catalog. “Opium” was released on the album Songs, peaking at No. 7 on the UK’s Dance Albums chart. Rusko currently claims more than half a million monthly Spotify listeners.

Key Drivers

EDM. According to 2018 IMS Business Report, the EDM (electronic dance music) industry is currently valued at $7.4 billion, estimating that the global EDM industry could be worth nearly $9 billion by 2021. In fact, EDM as a genre is beginning to blend into mainstream culture, with crossover hits appearing in both pop and R&B categories. As the once-underground genre becomes deeper embedded in mainstream culture, crossover tracks bridge the gap between genres.

International. The majority of this catalog’s earnings come from abroad — at 57% of historical earnings. Although international royalty distribution can lag behind domestic payments and arrive with limited detail, as the winner of this auction you’ll be entitled to any past performance royalties paid by BMI, regardless of when they were earned. As this collection earns primarily from countries outside the United States, it’s important to note that international earnings can often be reported to distributors with limited detail. These international earnings often include income from radio, streaming platforms, and TV/Film.

Tour. Zedd is currently gearing up for a worldwide tour this fall. With dates from September through November, tickets for the global tour go on sale this week. Tours give artists the chance to solidify their current fan base and expand their reach to new listeners.
