Up for auction is “Saved,” the third single from Khalid’s debut studio album American Teen. “Saved” appeared on the certified-platinum album which reached a peak position at No. 4 on Billboard’s 200 chart and received multiple Grammy-nominations. The foundation of this collection’s earnings derive from streaming sources. In fact, since its release, nearly 70% of earnings for this catalog have derived directly from platforms Apple Music, Spotify, Pandora and more.

At only 20 years old, performing artist Khalid appeals to an audience some refer to as “the streaming generation.” According to a recent study by Fluent, millennials and Gen-Z are the primary users of, subscription services like Apple Music and Spotify. Collectively, millennials and Gen-Z make up over 150 million individuals in the US. As the majority of Khalid’s following falls within this age group, demand on streaming sources follows suit.

Recently, international earnings have begun to build on this foundation. International royalty distribution can lag behind domestic payments and arrive with limited detail. This explains why these revenues have only just arrived for this collection in the last pay period. International royalties for this collection make up 30% of earnings in the last 12 months and continue to gain relevance

Key Drivers

Hip-Hop/Streaming. This catalog is a perfect example of two trends: hip-hop and streaming's growth worldwide. According to BuzzAngle's 2018 Year End Report, hip-hop is the most popular genre of music in the U.S. The driver for the increase is streaming.

Hip-hop/rap tracks accounted for more than a quarter of all on-demand plays on music streaming services in the US in 2018. Streaming accounts for 61% of this catalog’s earnings over the last 12 months. With only 6 quarters to compare data, these earnings are showing growth in their early stages.

International. The majority of this catalog’s recent earnings come from abroad — at 25% of historical earnings and 30% in the last 12 months. Although international royalty distribution can lag behind domestic payments and arrive with limited detail, as the winner of this auction you’ll be entitled to any past performance royalties paid by ASCAP, regardless of when they were earned.

As this collection earns primarily from countries outside the United States, it’s important to note that international earnings can often be reported to distributors with limited detail. These international earnings often include income from radio, streaming platforms, and TV/Film.
