Up for auction is the songwriter and publishing royalties derived from the massively popular Disney franchise, Descendants. Featuring multiple tracks from the RIAA certified Gold soundtracks of both Descendants and Descendants 2, this collection offers investors the opportunity to earn from the massive reach of the 5th Most Watched Cable Movie of All Time and more. Both soundtracks debuted at No. 1 and No. 6 on Billboard’s US 200 charts, respectively.
Streaming sources drive the majority of recent earnings, at 45% of royalties generated in the last 12 months. Historically, streaming accounts for nearly a third of this collection’s earnings. It’s important to note that Disney soundtracks have a life outside of the big screen. This fact can be seen clearly in the streaming income.
This collection’s top-earning track is the Dove Cameron hit “Ways To Be Wicked” from the sequel, Descendants 2. Debuting at No. 1 on both Radio Disney and Billboard’s Under 100 Singles, in the last 12 months alone this track drove over 65% of royalties collected. The film itself premiered in late 2017, contributing to a large spike in streaming earnings for the track in Q3 2017.
Following closely behind in earnings is “Set It Off,” featured in the original Descendants film. Contributing to 19% of earnings historically, the track debuted in July 2015. It’s worth noting that Dove Cameron is not only the performing artist but also the lead star of both films.
Additional noteworthy tracks include the additional Dove Cameron track, “Say Hey” from her other Disney TV series Liv & Maddie, Firekid's debut track “Lay By Me," “Ring Ring” from Shake It Up! and dozens more.
Tv/Film. This catalog benefits from placements in TV/Film, contributing to over 55% of this catalog's historic earnings. The tracks “Ways To Be Wicked” and “Set It Off” earn from placements in the massive Disney film franchise, Descendants. “Set It Off” earns from the 5th most watched cable movie of all time, the original Descendants, while “Ways To Be Wicked” collects from the sequel, Descendants 2. Every time either film airs on TV, a royalty is generated for the included works. As the winner of this auction, you'll collect the performance royalties for any of the songs' use in TV/Film.
International. The majority of this catalog’s earnings come from abroad — at 12% of earnings in the last 12 months. Although international royalty distribution can lag behind domestic payments and arrive with limited detail, as the winner of this auction you’ll be entitled to any past performance royalties paid by BMI, regardless of when they were earned.
As this collection earns primarily from countries outside the United States, it’s important to note that international earnings can often be reported to distributors with limited detail. These international earnings often include income from radio, streaming platforms, and TV/Film.
Gen-Z/Streaming. According to a recent study by Fluent, millennials and Gen-Z are the primary users of subscription services like Apple Music and Spotify. As the majority of The Descendants and The Descendants 2 fans fall within this age range, demand on streaming sources follows suit. Driving nearly 22% of earnings in the last 12 months, both works have over 300 million and 35 million spins collectively on YouTube and Spotify, respectively. Historically, the majority of streaming earnings derive from YouTube, Spotify, Pandora, and Apple Music.
It’s worth noting that over 10% of earnings in the last 12 months derived from streaming video sources Netflix, Amazon Video, Hulu, and more. Disney plans to launch Disney Plus, its very own streaming platform, this year which will likely feature the Descendants films.
New Releases. The Descendants franchise is currently set to release the third film in the saga, Descendants 3, in July 2019. While the new songs featured in the film are not included in this auction, the new film can help boost earnings for the two original films as they re-air surrounding the debut. The release of a new movie for the saga draws discovery among first-time viewers and re-engages existing fans. It also is an encouraging sign that the film series continues to hold resilience among Disney viewers.
