Description

Now is your chance to collect publishing earnings from an international catalog rooted in the global success of both K-pop and J-pop genres. This auction features huge names in the genre, including K-pop super group’s EXO, B.A.P and more! As the winner of this auction, you will collect the publisher's share of mechanical, public performance, and sync royalties.

To date, the highest-earning title, with 62% of last year’s royalties is “Run This” performed by K-pop group EXO. “Run This” was released in 2017 off EXO’s Japanese certified-Gold album Countdown. The album itself peaked at No.1 on Billboard Japan’s Albums Chart and No. 4 on Billboard’s US World Albums chart. Earnings for the track are remarkably consistent since its release.

Following closely behind in recent earnings is the 2018 release “All The Way Up” (bringing in 23% of last year’s earnings). The track is from the Korean pop band B.A.P featured on the album Massive. The band has received dozens of notable awards including the 2016 Asia Artist Award for Best Entertainer and the 2016 Hot Trend Award at the GAON K-Pop Awards.

The largest income source is mechanical royalties — publishing royalties earned when music is either physically sold (CDs), downloaded (iTunes), or streamed online (Spotify) – at 76% of all earnings historically. Recently, Digital earnings are on the rise, up 38% over the prior year.

Key Drivers

Income Mix. The winner of this auction can receive income from various royalty streams:

  • Mechanical: Royalties paid to songwriters and artists when music is sold (downloaded) but also when music is streamed (streaming mechanicals) “on-demand” like Spotify for example. Click here to learn more about Mechanical Royalties.

  • Digital: Royalties paid to songwriters and artists for digital income reported to the distributor, which includes when music is sold (downloaded), when music is streamed “on-demand” (streaming mechanicals) and when music is performed publicly (streaming performance).

  • Performance: Royalties paid to songwriters when music is performed publicly. Music played over the radio, in a restaurant or bar, or over a service like Spotify or Pandora is considered a public performance.

  • Synchronization: Royalties paid to songwriters and publishers for the licensing of a song in music for a movie, TV show, or commercial.

This catalog’s income mix is centered around an impressive foundation of Mechanical royalties – at 76% of all earnings historically. It’s worth noting, Digital earnings, which make up 15% of earnings in the last 12 months, are on the rise, up 38% over the prior year.

K-Pop Genre. 2018 was the year of K-pop’s undeniable rise to become a globally recognized industry, according to Forbes.

Korean pop acts first began to go viral over a decade ago with the emergence of YouTube. As a result, the Korean music industry has grown in recognition and popularity in both Asia and around the globe. K-Pop now has an audience in the United States, Europe, the Middle East, and South America, and other Asian markets, including Japan.

According to Nielsen, for the first time ever, songs by multiple K-Pop acts achieved success on the Billboard Hot 100 and other charts, suggesting the K-Pop revolution may have only just begun.
