Description
Up for auction is a collection of pop tracks with global reach, along with music featured in Disney Channel’s mega-hit young adult franchise, Descendants.
Thanks to its international appeal, in the last year this catalog earned the majority of its royalties (60%) from overseas sources. TV/Film income is the second highest-earning source with 23% of last year’s revenue and holding fairly steady year-over-year.
The catalog’s top-producing track is “Summer Days” from Belgian pop star Milow featuring Colombian vocalist Sebastián Yatra. Released in 2017, the single brought in 30% of last year’s income. Rounding out top-earning global titles, there is “Someone To You” from English rock musician Banners and “Catch 22” from Australian hip-hop artist Illy.
Another notable feature of this catalog is that it includes songs from a variety of multi-Platinum artists like Sia, Sza, Hoodie Allen, Aloe Blacc, and the legendary Mike Love from the Beach Boys.
Finally, this collection includes the Dove Cameron hit “Ways To Be Wicked” from the popular Disney sequel, Descendants 2. The single debuted at No. 1 on both Radio Disney and Billboard’s Under 100 Singles, and accounts for 19% of last year’s income. The film itself premiered on the Disney Channel in late 2017, contributing to a large spike in streaming earnings for the track in Q1-2018. The catalog also includes Dove Cameron’s “Set It Off,” which is featured in the original Descendants film. It's worth noting that Dove Cameron is not only the performing artist but also the lead star of both Disney films.
Key Drivers
Disney & New Releases. The Descendants franchise is currently set to release the third film in the saga, Descendants 3, in August 2019. While the new songs featured in the film are not included in this auction, the new film can help boost earnings for the two original films as they re-air surrounding the debut. The release of a new movie for the saga draws discovery among first-time viewers and re-engages existing fans. It also is an encouraging sign that the film series continues to hold resilience among Disney viewers.
Combined “Ways To Be Wicked” and “Set It Off” account for 39% of historic income from the songs’ use in the two films. Every time either films air on TV or are streamed on-demand, a royalty is generated for the songs. As the winner of this auction, you'll collect the performance royalties for any of the songs' use in TV/Film for the next 10 years.
International Royalties. The majority of this catalog’s earnings come from abroad — at 60% of earnings in the last 12 months. These international earnings have also increased dramatically, as foreign societies begin to report revenue to ASCAP.
Although international royalty distribution can lag behind domestic payments and arrive with limited detail, as the winner of this auction you’ll be entitled to any past performance royalties paid by ASCAP, regardless of when they were earned.
As this collection earns primarily from countries outside the United States, it’s important to note that international earnings can often be reported to distributors with limited detail. These international earnings often include income from radio, streaming platforms, and TV/Film.
About the Royalty Distributor
American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) is one of four United States performing rights organizations, along with BMI, SESAC & Global Music Rights.
