Up for auction are two works featuring current hip-hop leaders, Drake, Giggs, PNB Rock, and Russ. This collection’s top-earning track at 64% of recent earnings is “KMT” from one of Billboard’s 50 Best Albums of 2017, Drake’s More Life. The commercial mixtape itself debuted at number one on the US Billboard 200, becoming Drake’s seventh consecutive number one album. In doing so, the album broke several streaming records.
"KMT" proved impressive international influence shortly after its release. It entered the charts at number 25 on the Billboard Canadian Hot 100 and spent an additional two weeks on the US Billboard Hot 100. “KMT” also became Drake's second-highest charting song from More Life on the UK Singles Chart. The track later certified Gold in the UK. It’s also worth noting that Drake is currently booked for a week residency at Europe’s top-grossing concert venue, London’s famed O2 Arena. He regularly incorporates the track into his live performances.
Drake currently ranks as the 8th most-streamed artist on Spotify. It is not surprising that streaming is this collection’s highest-earning source, driving well over half of recent earnings.
The remaining 36% of earnings in the last 12 months came from the PnB Rock track “Issues” featuring hip-hop influencer Russ. The track was featured on the debut studio album Catch These Feelings.
Hip-Hop/Streaming. This catalog is a perfect example of two trends: hip-hop and streaming's growth worldwide. According to BuzzAngle's 2018 Year End Report, hip-hop is the most popular genre of music in the U.S. The driver for the increase is streaming. Hip-hop/rap tracks accounted for more than a quarter of all on-demand plays on music streaming services in the US in 2018. Streaming accounts for 57% of this catalog’s earnings over the last 12 months.
Drake’s Massive Popularity. In June 2018, the RIAA announced that Drake is the top-certified singles artist ever with 142 million certified units. Drake also holds a number of historic Billboard chart records including Most Simultaneously Charted Hot 100 Titles, Most Top 10 Hot 100 Debuts in a Week, Most Hot 100 Top 10s Among Solo Males and many more. Drake just recently released a new album and is actively touring through May 2019. He is currently booked for a week residency at Europe’s top-grossing concert venue, London’s famed O2 Arena. In fact, this residency is set to start this week (April 4th-April 11th) and continue through early next week. While the new songs are not included in this auction, the release of new music and active tours reengages existing fans and draws discovery among new fans.
International. The majority of this catalog’s earnings come from abroad — at 32% of historical earnings. Although international royalty distribution can lag behind domestic payments and arrive with limited detail, as the winner of this auction you’ll be entitled to any past performance royalties paid by BMI, regardless of when they were earned.
Drake’s international success contributes heavily to this collection’s international earnings. As this collection earns from countries outside the United States, it’s important to note that international earnings can often be reported to distributors with limited detail. These international earnings often include income from radio, streaming platforms, and TV/Film.
