Description

Up for auction are mechanical, sync and performance royalties from the Grammy-nominated hip-hop group Migos, featuring individually awarded artists and cousins – Offset, Quavo and Takeoff. This collection earns predominantly from the Migos tracks “Kidding Me” and “F*** 12” but includes several additional tracks that contribute to earnings.

Over 61% of historic earnings derive from this collections oldest track, 2013 release “F*** 12,” from the album Y.R.N. The album itself received favorable reviews, ranking as the third-best mixtape of 2013 by Rolling Stone. In the last 12 months alone, “F*** 12” has shown impressive growth at over 123%. Following closely behind is “Kidding Me” with 32% of historic earnings. The 2014 release appeared on the mixtape No Label 2 which debuted as the sequel following the success of the original mixtape No Label.

Currently, mechanical royalties are on the rise, up 54% in the last 12 months. In the most recent pay period (Q1 2019), both top earning tracks, “F*** 12” and “Kidding Me,” received large payments from Spotify, Apple Music and more. The winning investor will benefit from these tracks increased success on popular streaming platforms.

Additionally, other earning tracks “Famous,” from Rich The Kid ft. Quavo, “Who The Hell” from Migos, “Touchdown” from Rich The Kid ft. Kodak Black and more contribute to 6% of earnings in the last 12 months.

Key Drivers

Income Mix. The winner of this auction can receive income from various royalty streams:

  • Mechanical: Royalties paid to songwriters and artists when music is sold (downloaded) but also when music is streamed (streaming mechanicals) “on-demand” like Spotify for example. Click here to learn more about Mechanical royalties.

  • Performance: Royalties paid to songwriters when music is performed publicly. Music played over the radio, in a restaurant or bar, or over a service like Spotify or Pandora is considered a public performance.

  • Synchronization: Royalties paid to songwriters and publishers for the licensing of a song in music for a movie, TV show, or commercial.

This catalog’s income mix is predominantly mechanical and performance royalties. Making up over 73% of historic earnings, in the last 12 months, mechanical royalties have shown an impressive growth at 54% over the previous period. Performance royalties make up nearly a third of this collections historic and recent earnings. Though this catalog has yet to collect a sync payment, as the winning bidder, you are due any future sync royalties generated by these works.

Mechanical Rate Increase. The US Copyright Royalty Board recently raised the rates digital music services must pay for mechanical royalties by nearly 44% over the next 5 years. Historically, this catalog has earned over 70% of its royalties from mechanical royalties. What's more, in the last 12 months, these royalties have increased 54% over the previous period. As the winner of this auction, you will benefit from the mechanical rate increases as you collect mechanical royalties.
