This catalog features various R&B songs from the early 2000s, highlighted by tracks from Platinum-certified vocalist Avant. What’s exciting is despite being released over 15 years ago, these royalties are growing! This collection of music earned $8,449 in the last 12 months.
The top-earning track to date is Avant’s No. 1 single “Separated,” featuring Kelly Rowland. Released in 2000, “Separated” was off Avant’s debut studio album My Thoughts, which become Platinum-certified. “Separated” hit No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs and No. 23 on the mainstream Hot 100. Impressively, the song is experiencing 16% growth over the last year. This increase is attributable to streaming sources: Pandora, YouTube and Apple Music.
Other Avant titles included are “Makin Good Love” and “Don’t Say No Just Say Yes.” The two song are from Avant’s second album Ecstasy -- combined they bring in 33% of income in the last year. Both tracks are seeing growth during the same time period, thanks primarily to Pandora and Apple Music.
Also part of this catalog are the titles “Nothing In This World” from R&B vocalist Keke Wyatt featuring Avant and “Funky Sounds” a late 90’s track from Lil Bud and Tizone. “Nothing In This World” reached No. 4 on Billboard’s Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs in 2002 and has also seen recent growth attributable to streaming sources.
Interestingly, the song “Funky Sounds” earns almost entirely from TV performances. The track is part of the soundtrack for the 1998 comedy Don't Be a Menace to South Central While Drinking Your Juice in the Hood. As the winning bidder, every time the film plays on TV or is streamed on Netflix, a royalty is generated and you’ll collect it!
Song Age. This catalog contains music with release dates going back to 1998! Industry wide, “Deep Catalog” (music released more than 3 years ago) represents 51% of music streamed today. Impressively, this collection of songs aligns with this trend. The highest-earning tracks in the catalog -- like “Separated” -- were released nearly 20 years ago. And yet, these older works are actually experiencing earnings growth over time. A catalog containing more mature works is something is worth noting as an investor.
Streaming. Streaming is the largest source of royalties for this catalog at 75% of income in the last 12 months. You’ll also see there is a noticeable shift in income sources in the last 12 months to streaming. As an overall industry trend, streaming now accounts for 41% of total listening activity, making it the preferred listening format for music consumers. With streaming as the driving income source for this asset, its surge across the music industry again is significant.
