Description
The highest earner for this collection is arguably one of the most recognizable Tupac Shakur tracks to date – “Hail Mary.” Released to his final posthumous album The Don Killuminati: The 7 Day Theory, “Hail Mary” contributes to over half of this collection’s historic and recent earnings. Since its 1997 release, “Hail Mary” has been re-released multiple times, including a release to Tupac’s Greatest Hits album in 1998. Other songs from the same album included in this collection are “Just Like Daddy,” “Life of An Outlaw” and others.
“Hail Mary” also appeared in the 2017 Tupac biopic All Eyez On Me. This collection also includes additional tracks from the film, which collectively contributed to 16% of earnings in the last 12 months. As the winning investor, you will earn anytime the film airs on TV or streaming platforms. View the scene which features “Hail Mary” on the ‘Media’ tab now.
Additional top earners for this collection consist of “Baby Don’t Cry” and “Breathin’” from the late Shakur. Collectively the tracks make up 13% of this collections historic earnings.
It’s important to note that this collection includes dozens of other historic 2Pac and Outlawz tracks. What’s interesting is this collection earns predominantly from streaming sources, despite the fact that most of the songs were released prior to the creation of streaming platforms. Streaming contributes to over a third of this collection’s earnings in the last 12 months and grew 13% in the same time period. Collections of this age with established earning growth do not come around often.
Consistently cited as one of the greatest and most influential artists of all time, this catalog also includes multiple features from hip-hop megastar Eminem. Tracks in this collection featuring Eminem include "Black Cotton" and "One Day At A Time."
Key Drivers
Lasting Relevance. Not surprisingly, the star power within this catalog is an attractive feature. Featuring “Hail Mary” from 2Pac — these are multi-Platinum-selling artists with a proven track record of hits, loyal fan bases, and mainstream appeal. Named one of the Greatest Rappers of All Time, 2Pac has received six Grammy nominations including a nomination for Best Rap Album for All Eyez On Me. It’s worth noting that the life of 2Pac and success of the famed album inspired the film All Eyez On Me, and as the winning investor, you will receive earnings anytime the film airs.
The late rapper’s estate hails as one of the most valuable in the rap world and for nearly a decade, 2Pac appears on Forbes Hip-Hop Cash Kings list, which ranks rap's top 20 earners. The RIAA diamond artist claims an impressive 10 million monthly Spotify listeners.
Hip-Hop/Streaming. This catalog is a perfect example of two trends: hip-hop and streaming's growth worldwide. According to BuzzAngle's 2018 Year End Report, hip-hop is the most popular genre of music in the U.S. The driver for the increase is streaming. Hip-hop/rap tracks accounted for more than a quarter of all on-demand plays on music streaming services in the US in 2018.
Streaming accounts for 32% of this catalog’s earnings over the last 12 months and these earnings are up 13% in the same period. A key feature worth noting is this collections age and relation to streaming. Despite the majority of these works release dates preceding the creation of Spotify, Pandora, and Apple Music, streaming platforms are driving significant growth for this collection. This is a feature certainly worth noting as an investor.
TV/Film. This catalog benefits from placements in TV/Film, contributing to over 16% of this catalog's historic earnings. This collection features cues in the feature film All Eyez On Me. Released in 2017 as an homage to the life of Tupac Shakur, every time the film plays on TV, a royalty is generated for the cues. Due to its recent release, royalties from the film have only just started paying for the tracks. As the winner of this auction, you'll collect all earned performance royalties that have yet to pay as well as future royalties generated by music featured in the film.
International. The majority of this catalog’s earnings come from abroad — at 37% of historical earnings. Although international royalty distribution can lag behind domestic payments and arrive with limited detail, as the winner of this auction you’ll be entitled to any past performance royalties paid by ASCAP, regardless of when they were earned.
As this collection earns primarily from countries outside the United States, it’s important to note that international earnings can often be reported to distributors with limited detail. These international earnings often include income from radio, streaming platforms, and TV/Film.
