Up for auction is a hip-hop collection featuring a variety of new releases and older, more established tracks. The top earning in this royalty stream, with 42% of last year’s income, is Wiz Khalifa’s 2017 release “Something New” featuring Ty Dolla $ign. 75% of this individual tracks historical earnings derive from streaming and radio.
Another important track from this catalog is, “Dangerous Games” from the Grammy-winning hip-hop group 112’s 2017 reunion album, Q Mike Slim Daron. Contributing to a third of recent earnings, the track earns predominately from radio while also claiming over two million spins on Spotify.
Also featured are new earnings from Grammy-winning artist Chris Brown’s hit track “To My Bed.” Released in 2017, “To My Bed” appeared on Brown's eighth studio album, Heartbreak on a Full Moon. The album itself peaked on charts around the world, landing a No. 1 seat in both the US and UK.
Lastly, additional noteworthy works in this collection feature multiple Christian hip-hop artists including Trip Lee’s “Sweet Victory,” and Lecrae’s “Nuthin.” Collectively, these works contribute to 14% of historical earnings.
Hip-Hop/Streaming. This catalog is a perfect example of two trends: hip-hop and streaming's growth worldwide. According to BuzzAngle's 2018 Year End Report, hip-hop is the most popular genre of music in the U.S. The driver for the increase is streaming. Hip-hop/rap tracks accounted for more than a quarter of all on-demand plays on music streaming services in the US in 2018. Streaming accounts for 43% of this catalog’s earnings over the last 12 months and these earnings are up significantly in the same period.
Radio. Radio is one of the largest sources of revenue for this catalog, accounting for 37% of historic royalties. Although radio royalties are still being generated, they could eventually level off. Typically, songs that experience significant radio play can often build a foundation for other types of income.
Case in point: streaming. Historically, streaming brought in 42% of royalties. In the last 12 months, however, streaming accounted for 43% of royalties. Streaming royalties are also seeing a significant increase over the last 12 months. So as we're seeing as the radio royalties begin to slow down, other income sources (streaming) begin to increase.
