Description

Up for auction is a collection of works highlighting some of the biggest names in hip-hop including Drake, Young Thug and more. True to the nature of hip-hop as a genre, the majority of earnings for this collection derive from streaming platforms, at 75% historically.

The top-earning track is “Blue Tint” from Drake’s album Scorpion. Scorpion was certified Platinum a day before release due to the hit success of multiple previously released singles. In its first day of release, Scorpion broke Spotify's one-day global record for album streams with 132.45 million streams. Additionally, Scorpion was nominated for Album of the Year at the 2019 Grammy Awards and won Top Billboard 200 Album at the 2019 Billboard Music Awards. “Blue Tint” makes up nearly a third of recent earnings.

Contributed to an additional third of recent earnings is Grammy-awarded artist Young Thug track “Wyclef Jean.” Released in 2016, the viral music video produced for the track currently boasts over 35 million plays on YouTube.

Additional Drake track “Ice Melts” makes up just over 20% of recent earnings. Featured on More Life, the album itself debuted at number one on the US Billboard 200, becoming Drake’s seventh consecutive number one album, while also breaking several streaming records.

What’s compelling about this group of works is the majority of recent earnings are spread evenly across the top three earning works, two of which are new releases. This spread provides a diverse income mix between new(er) releases and more mature works. Additionally, this means the catalog’s earnings are not tied to the success of a single track, providing built-in diversification.

Key Drivers

Hip-Hop & Streaming. Hip-hop overtook rock in 2017 as the most popular genre of music in the U.S. In the first half of 2018, it accounted for 31% of all music consumption. According to the Nielsen report, total consumption of Urban songs (Hip-Hop/Rap and R&B) grew by 18% in both sales and streams.

This collection is a perfect example of these two trends: hip-hop and streaming's growth worldwide. Streaming accounts for 76% of this catalogs earnings in the last 12 months.

As 2015 and 2016’s most-streamed artist, Drake, took home the crown once again in 2018 with 8.2 billion streams in 2018 alone. The Canadian rapper is now Spotify's most-streamed artist of all time. This is good news for you, as it exposes Drake and his songs to new listeners & potential fans.

Drake’s Massive Popularity. In June 2018, the RIAA announced that Drake is the top-certified singles artist ever with 142 million certified units. Drake also holds a number of historic Billboard chart records including Most Simultaneously Charted Hot 100 Titles, Most Top 10 Hot 100 Debuts in a Week, Most Hot 100 Top 10s Among Solo Males and many more. Drake just recently released a new album and while he is not currently on tour, he did just wrap up a hugely successful world tour which consisted of a week residency at Europe’s top-grossing concert venue, London’s famed O2 Arena. While new songs are not included in this auction, the release of new music and active tours reengages existing fans and draws discovery among new fans.
