Up for auction are publishing royalties from a diverse selection of budding artists including Trippie Redd, PnB Rock, 21 Savage, Playboi Carti, and Lil Uzi Vert, as well as seasoned hip-hop vets Wiz Khalifa, Rick Ross, and more.

Mechanical royalties are the top-earning source for this catalog with 57% of last year’s returns. Public performance royalties follow with 24%. Finally, YouTube earnings bring in 17% — and consist of revenue generated on the YouTube platform (including ad revenue), and notably grew 9% year-over-year.

Royalties are widely dispersed across this catalog with the highest-earning song — “Limitless” — accounting for 13% of last year’s earnings. That provides built-in diversification amongst the catalog’s songs.

You’ll notice a spike in royalties in Q3-2018 — this is a result of increased mechanical royalties from newer releases, along with a non-recurring sync payment for the track “Records," for its use in the 2018 film Uncle Drew.

This hip-hop catalog features nearly 200 songs from a group of up-and-coming hip-hop artists. As a result of the diverse song mix, the top five tracks account for just 38% of the catalog’s returns over the last year.

Leading royalties is the single “Limitless” from Trippie Redd. The track is off the debut commercial mixtape A Love Letter To You, released in 2017. The Gold-certified album peaked on the Billboard 200 at No. 64 and received acclaim from critics. To date,  “Limitless” has over 17 million streams on Spotify.

Following next is 2017’s “Plans” from PnB Rock with 8% of last year’s royalties. The single is also off a mixtape titled GTTM: Goin Thru the Motions, which became Gold-certified and topped out at No. 28 on the Billboard 200.

Other notable titles include:

  • “Check” performed by DP Beats and featuring Playboi Carti (2018)
  • “Ready Set Go (Vlone)” from Lil Uzi Vert (2016)
  • “No Peace” performed by 21 Savage (2015)
  •  Wiz Khalifa's "Freak Dips" and "X 4 X" featuring Desiigner
  • "Kyrie" from Rick Ross

Key Drivers

Income Mix. The winner of this auction can receive income in various ways:

  • Mechanical: Royalties paid to songwriters and publishers when music is sold (think CD or vinyl) but also when music is streamed “on-demand” (like Spotify).
  • Performance: Royalties paid to songwriters when music is performed publicly. Music played over the radio, in a restaurant or bar, or over a service like Spotify or Pandora is considered a public performance.
  • Synchronization: Royalties paid to songwriters and publishers for the licensing of a song in music for a movie, TV show, or commercial.

Hip-Hop & Streaming. Hip-Hop/Streaming. This catalog is a perfect example of two trends: hip-hop and streaming's growth worldwide. According to BuzzAngle's 2019 Year End Report, hip-hop is the most popular genre of music in the U.S. The driver for the increase is streaming. Six out of the top 10 streamed songs were hip-hop/rap and 52 out of the top 100 most streamed songs were hip-hop/rap.
