Description

Up for bid is copyright ownership and publishing revenue generated by a collection of blues/rock music, featuring by songs from the Grammy-nominated guitarist Joe Bonamassa, blues vocalist Beth Hart, and the critically-acclaimed group The Mavericks.

The income mix for this asset is evenly split between mechanical and performance sources, with each bringing in 45% of last year’s revenue. Notably, performance income saw 11% growth year-over-year.

Five songs from Joe Bonamassa’s 2014 album Different Shades of Blue are the foundation of this catalog combined they account for 40% of last year’s royalties. The title track “Different Shades of Blue” is the highest-contributing song, bringing in  24% of income over the last four quarters. Different Shades of Blue debuted at No. 8 on the Billboard 200, which makes it Bonamassa's highest-charting album to date, and his first top-10 on the chart.

“Caught Out In The Rain” is this catalog’s top-earning song with 45% of last year’s royalties. The track is performed by frequent Joe Bonamassa collaborator (and Grammy-nominee) Beth Hart. Released in 2012, “Caught In The Rain” saw a resurgence in popularity as it was used in a figure skating routine in the 2018 Winter Olympics. As a result, public performance earnings for the song rose significantly in Q3-2018.

An exciting feature for this asset is the potential upside for re-recorded songs. The composition “Sugar Shack” was recorded and released as a dance/club hit in 2017 by pop artist Tami. Interestingly, Beth Hart is planning to release a blues version of “Sugar Shack” on an upcoming 2020 album. This is great example of the value of owning a piece of the musical composition copyright because the winning bidder will collect the first royalties for the Beth Hart recording of the song.

Finally, this collection includes “Born To Be Blue” from The Mavericks. It was the first single from their 2013 reunion album In Time. The Mavericks are known for their unique sound that mixes country, Tex-Mex, rock-a-billy and Latin influences.

Key Drivers

Musical Composition Copyrights. You will own the musical composition copyrights for this catalog. That means you'll have control over future licensing opportunities and any new revenue sources for the music. Please see the section below titled Note About Copyright/Ongoing Administration for more important information.

Income Mix. The winner of this auction can receive income from four different royalty streams:

  • Mechanical: Royalties paid to songwriters and artists when music is sold (think CD or vinyl) but also when music is streamed (streaming mechanicals) “on-demand” (like Spotify).

  • Performance: Royalties paid to songwriters when music is performed publicly. Music played over the radio, in a restaurant or bar, or over a service like Spotify or Pandora is considered a public performance.

  • Synchronization: Royalties paid to songwriters and publishers for the licensing of a song in music for a movie, TV show, or commercial.

Featured Artists. Joe Bonamassa debuted on the music scene in 1989 as the opening act for B.B. King at the ripe age of 12. With over a dozen No.1 solo Billboard Blues Albums, Bonamassa has performed alongside legends Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck and more.

He’s widely considered a blues guitar icon thanks to his last 15 solo albums. And he continues to stay relevant in front of his fans — he’s currently on tour consistently with dates across the globe through spring 2020.

WHAT IS BEING SOLD?

The Seller’s interest in the musical composition copyrights, including the publisher’s share of all publishing royalties attributable to the musical works in the track list noted above. (The songwriter’s share of public performance royalties is excluded from the sale.)
