Description

This is a unique offering that includes musical composition copyrights and income from their respective income streams. Included is copyright ownership and publishing revenue for a collection of blues/rock music, featuring songs from the Grammy-nominated guitarist Joe Bonamassa.

Bonamassa debuted on the music scene in 1989 as the opening act for B.B. King at the ripe age of 12. With over a dozen No.1 solo Billboard Blues Albums, Bonamassa has performed alongside legends Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck and more.

This auction includes six songs from Bonamassa’s 2016 album, Blues of Desperation. Collectively, these tracks account for 77% of last year’s revenue. The album debuted at No.1 on Billboard’s Blues Album chart, No.12 on the Billboard 200, No. 2 on Top Rock Albums, as well as charting in 16 additional countries.

The top-earning song in the last year was “How Deep This River Runs” with 23% of income. Rounding out the highest-earning tracks are “This Train,” “Valley Runs Low,” and “Drive,” all off the album Blues of Desperation.

The largest income source for this catalog is public performance royalties, making up 51% of earnings in the last 12 months. Historically, mechanical earnings are the leading income source, with 57% of revenue to date.

Also included are five tracks from Joe Bonamassa's 2018 album Redemption, most notably “Redemption” and “Self-Inflicted Wounds.” Collectively, the two tracks account for 17% of last year’s income, as royalties begin to roll in. The album was very successful spending 16-weeks at No. 1 on Billboard's Blues Album chart. Even nine months after its release, Redemption is still on the weekly chart at No. 8, with a total of 43 weeks to date.

Key Drivers

Musical Composition Copyrights. You will own the musical composition copyrights for this catalog. That means you'll have control over future licensing opportunities and any new revenue sources for the music. Please see the section below titled Note About Copyright/Ongoing Administration for more important information.

Income Mix. The winner of this auction can receive income from four different royalty streams:

  • Mechanical: Royalties paid to songwriters and artists when music is sold (think CD or vinyl) but also when music is streamed (streaming mechanicals) “on-demand” (like Spotify).

  • Performance: Royalties paid to songwriters when music is performed publicly. Music played over the radio, in a restaurant or bar, or over a service like Spotify or Pandora is considered a public performance.

  • Synchronization: Royalties paid to songwriters and publishers for the licensing of a song in music for a movie, TV show, or commercial.

    • This catalog recently benefitted from an upfront sync for the song "Redemption." It was featured in the trailer for CNN’s “The Redemption Project” in 2019. As the winning bidder, you’ll receive all upfront sync fees for any of the songs’ use in TV/Film or commercials.

  • Print: Royalties paid to songwriters and publishers for music transcribed to a print piece, such as sheet music.

WHAT IS BEING SOLD?

The Seller’s interest in the musical composition copyrights, including the publisher’s share of all publishing royalties, attributable to the musical works in the track list noted above. (The seller’s interest in the songwriter’s share of public performance royalties is excluded from the sale.)

Note About Copyright/Ongoing Administration

The musical composition copyrights for this catalog are currently administered by Wixen Music Publishing. The winner of this auction may elect to enter a new administration agreement with Wixen or move the catalog to an administrator of their choice. The winner will also assume control of the seller’s BMI publishing designee, “Go As A River Songs” (IPI # 780285523).

Note About Investment Term

The investment term is “at least 35 years” because U.S. copyright law gives artists and songwriters the right to terminate a copyright assignment after 35 years. The seller of this auction may have the right to terminate the assignment beginning in 2054. Click here to learn more about copyright termination.
