Description

Last year, we auctioned the songwriter royalties for this catalog — you can view that auction here. Now, up for bid are sizable publishing royalties from this multi-Platinum collection.

This star-studded catalog's top-five earning tracks date from 2012 to 2015. This means the catalog has a Dollar Age of approximately 4.6 years. (Read more about Dollar Age and why it’s important here). Not only have these songs generated royalties for upwards of seven years, but some track’s royalties are also growing.

The majority of the income (38%) in the last year came from a category this distributor labels as digital sync, and earnings grew impressively by 44% year-over-year. These digital sync royalties are paid solely by YouTube and are unlike traditional commercial sync royalties (see note below). Mechanical royalties are the second-highest earning source, with 33% of last year’s income.

Acting as the foundation of this offering with 64% of last year’s royalties is the single “Hot N*gga” (also known as “Hot Boy”) from Bobby Shmurda. “Hot N*gga” grew 35% over last year’s earnings. Released in 2014, the certified-Platinum song has 217 million Spotify spins, while the video has over 536 million YouTube views. The song also hit No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs and No. 6 on Hot 100.

This catalog also features 13 tracks from the massively popular hip-hop artist Meek Mill. The included Meek Mill works feature 2012’s “I’ma Boss” featuring Rick Ross, “Monster,” “Young & Gettin’ It,” and “Burn.” Other notable titles include Kid Ink’s “Lost In The Sauce,” “Trap House” from French Montana, and “Standing On Ferraris” from The Game featuring Diddy.

Key Drivers

Dollar Age. This collection of songs has a Dollar Age of approximetely 4.6. This means the majority of royalties earned in the last 12 months came from songs that have collected royalties for more than four years. A high Dollar Age like this suggests stability and longevity.

The highest-earning track — “Hot N*gga” — was released in 2014, and royalties continue to grow thanks to steady mechanical and rising digital sync income. A catalog containing mature works with consistent (and even growing earnings) is something worth noting as an investor. This can help sustain a catalog's earnings moving forward.

Income Mix. The winner of this auction can receive income in various ways:

  • Mechanical: Royalties paid to songwriters and artists when music is sold (think CD or vinyl) but also when music is streamed (streaming mechanicals) “on-demand” (like Spotify).

  • Performance: Royalties paid to songwriters when music is performed publicly. Music played over the radio, in a restaurant or bar, or over a service like Spotify or Pandora is considered a public performance.

  • Digital Sync: Royalties paid to songwriters and publishers when music is played on YouTube and any revenue generated on the YouTube platform by the music. This differs from commercial synchronization (noted below).

  • Synchronization: Royalties paid to songwriters and publishers for the licensing of a song in music for a movie, TV show, or commercial.

Featured Artists. Not surprisingly, the star power within this catalog is an attractive feature. From Bobby Shmurda, to 50 Cent, French Montana, to Kid Ink, to Diddy — these are multi-Platinum-selling artists with a proven track record of hits.

Perhaps most interesting is that the catalog contains 13 tracks from Meek Mill. The hip-hop star was recently released from prison and is at the center of a national debate over prison reform. Meek Mill is one of the most sought-after artists in the music industry and you can benefit from his back catalog being part of this collection.

Matching Right

This seller's publisher holds a matching right on any sale of the income generated by this catalog. The publisher will have the opportunity to match the winning bid after this auction closes. If you are the winning bidder, the publisher must first decline their matching right before you will be able to complete your purchase.
