Earlier this year, we auctioned this single-song listing featuring producer royalties from “Red Eye” from rapper YoungBoy Never Broke Again.
Now the winning investor is selling this asset as an NFT with all future payments to be made in Ether. As the winner, you’ll collect streaming and digital download earnings for the lifetime of the copyright on the single, as well as a share of royalties earned by sales of the associated album.
The format of this auction is a “non-fungible token” (NFT): a digital certificate of ownership created and stored on the Ethereum blockchain. All bidding will be conducted in Ether, the native currency of Ethereum. Royalties collected by the winning bidder will also be paid in Ether. For more details about Royalty Exchange NFT auctions, please read the article about NFT Auctions.
The smart contract for the NFT provides that the seller and Royalty Exchange will each automatically receive 5% of the purchase price for all secondary sales of the NFT, provided that such secondary sales take place via a marketplace that supports NFT resale royalty rights. If the secondary sale takes place outside of a marketplace that supports NFT smart contract resale royalty rights, the new NFT holder shall pay Royalty Exchange 10% of the secondary purchase price (“Resale Fee”). Royalty Exchange reserves the right to withhold all post-secondary sale royalty payments until it has received the Resale Fee.
Not surprisingly, streaming (both ad-supported and subscription) generated nearly all of this asset’s earnings — 99% of returns to date. Subscription streaming is the dominant of the two, alone accounting for 75% of earnings in the last 12 months.
ABOUT THE CATALOG:
Over the last five years, YoungBoy Never Broke Again has emerged as one of today's most popular rappers. He has a staggering YouTube following — currently sitting at No. 1 on the U.S. YouTube Music chart, with 248 consecutive weeks on the chart. In the last 28 days, his videos have globally amassed a combined 190 million views on the platform.
“Red Eye'' was released in 2020 on YoungBoy’s 15th mixtape album Still Flexin, Still Steppin. The mixtape was successful, debuting at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 and was YoungBoy's second-highest charting album at the time. "Red Eye" is also featured on the official NBA 2K21 soundtrack created for the popular video game that's sold over 10 million copies to date.
The single “Red Eye'' has nearly 32+ million spins on Spotify.
Streaming Growth Worldwide. According to IFPI’S Global Music Report 2021, subscription streaming revenues for recorded music increased 18.5% over the previous year. That’s the sixth consecutive year of growth, totaling 443 million paid subscription accounts worldwide. Total streaming (including both paid subscription and advertising-supported) grew 19.9% and reached $13.4 billion, or 62.1% of total global recorded music revenues.
Sound Recordings: Sound recording royalties benefit from streaming disproportionately more than composition-based royalties. If Spotify pays 70-cents of every dollar on music rights, 60-cents of that goes to the sound recording copyright (which the label splits with the artist based on their contract agreement), while the remaining 10-cents goes to the composition copyright.
Multiple Income Streams. The winner of this auction can receive royalties from various streams:
- Sales: Royalties paid to artists and producers when a recording is sold, which can be downloaded (on a platform like iTunes), as well as physical copies being sold (such as a C.D.).
- Streaming: Royalties paid to artists and producers when a recording is streamed “on-demand” (like Spotify or Apple Music for example).
- Synchronization: Royalties paid to artists and producers for the licensing of a recording in music for a movie, TV show, or commercial.
WHAT IS BEING SOLD?
The Seller's interest in all sound recording royalties (except for non-interactive digital performance royalties distributed by SoundExchange) attributable to the sound recordings listed in the Track List noted above.
