Description
Here we have a 25% writer's share of public performance royalties from a production catalog with an eight-year earning history. This collection of music has been used in numerous reality TV series, sports broadcasts, cable TV dramas, news magazine shows, and a feature film. In the last 12 months, this asset earned $5,635.
This catalog’s music has a heavy guitar influence, lending itself to a garage band-style sound. Highlights include placements in FX’s “Sons of Anarchy,” Showtime’s “Shameless,” Food Network’s “Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives,” Fox’s “Lucifer,” HGTV’s “Love It Or List It Vancouver,” IFC’s “Portlandia,” MLB and NFL programs and broadcasts, as well as the Halle Berry’s feature film “The Call.”
In the last three years, this catalog generated a consistent income stream of over $5,000 annually. The single highest-earning cue in this collection is the title “Date With My Demise” with over 300 different placements across TV series and commercial programming.
What’s also interesting about this collection is that the majority of earnings to date (76%) come from international sources. In particular, there are consistent royalties reported in the second quarter each year from Germany dating back to 2012. These royalties from Germany account for 36% of the last 12 months’ income.
Production music usage is seeing a significant uptake thanks to the digital content boom, with Production Music Association’s Joe Saba calling it a “$1 billion global industry hidden in plain sight. Right now, demand for this type of music is at an all-time high. If you'd like to learn more about production music, check out this link.
Finally, as an added bonus, this catalog contains nine indie rock tracks that were co-written with the legendary, Oscar- and Grammy-winning lyricist, Hal David in 2007.
Key Drivers
1.) If you’re the winning bidder, you will secure a 25% share of the writer’s public performance royalties generated by this catalog. The seller will retain the remaining 75% of the asset, meaning they will still have a heavily vested interest in the catalog and continue to work the catalog for placements.
Case in point... the seller has licensing deals with multiple well-known production libraries such as APM (Associated Production Music), Killer Tracks and Universal Production Music. All three are online production music libraries used as a resource for producers and editors of film, TV, radio, advertising, video games, trailers, and interactive media content. You can hear sample tracks from the seller's catalog on both the Killer Tracks and Universal Production Music websites — take a look at the “Media” tab.
These companies have licensed music from this catalog to their song archives. Whenever production groups are creating new content -- a TV program, commercial or film -- they look for music within vast production music libraries, like Killer Tracks. If music from this catalog is used in future series/shows, both you and the seller will earn royalties. Essentially, as the winner of this auction, you will benefit from these songs being part of multiple large production libraries and receive royalties when they are used.
2.) The majority of this catalog’s earnings come from abroad -- 76% of historic earnings come from outside the United States. You'll notice spikes in Q2 earnings for this catalog dating back to 2012. These substantial earning spikes came from performances in Germany paid out by the German collection society (or PRO) GEMA to ASCAP. These payments are distributed by ASCAP to its members for foreign performances.
Distribution of international royalties can take time to distribute without a regular schedule and can be reported with limited detail. It's important to take into consideration that as the winner of this auction, you'll be entitled to any royalties paid out by ASCAP going forward, including all foreign royalties for past performances.
What is being sold?
25% of the seller's interest in the songwriter's share of public performance royalties attributable to the seller's catalog of musical works. See the “Financials” tab for a full track list.
How does this asset make money?
Every time a network airs a TV show or commercial that uses any of the songs in this catalog, a public performance royalty is generated. This means every time “Love It Or List It Vancouver” or any other show, uses music from this catalog and airs on TV, you will earn money. Royalty Exchange will administer quarterly payments from ASCAP and the first distribution you will receive is April 2018 to be paid in May 2018.
