Here is your chance to earn royalties generated by the publishing share of a rock music catalog. An interesting thing about the publishing share is that it includes both public performance royalties and mechanical royalties. That's important because in today's world of music consumption, streaming revenues are growing. The key is that when a song is streamed on-demand, it counts as both a public performance and a “mini-purchase.” The composition therefore earns a public performance royalty and a streaming mechanical royalty at the same time. Two payments for one use!
Up for sale is 75% of the seller's share of publishing income from a large catalog of rock music. This catalog is led by songs from “Set the World on Fire,” the second album by Black Veil Brides. The top earning tracks are “Rebel Love Song,” “Fallen Angels,” and “The Legacy.” It also includes Korn's “Narcissistic Cannibal,” which has over 34 million views on YouTube. Other popular artists that have recorded songs from this catalog include Sugar Ray and Good Charlotte. In the last 12 months, 75% of this catalog earned $5,383.55.
In addition to performance and mechanical royalties, you'll also earn sync royalties when songs from this catalog are used in TV and film. The catalog's publishing rights are managed by Pulse Music, an emerging music services company. Pulse stands to benefit if they can find sync placements for these songs, so you will benefit from their licensing efforts as well.
This auction is for three different royalty streams. This means the winner of this auction can receive income in multiple ways:
- Mechanical: Royalties paid to publishers when music is sold (like digital downloads), and also when music is streamed on-demand, like on Spotify (streaming mechanicals).
- Performance: Royalties paid when music is performed publicly. Music played over the radio, in a restaurant or bar, or over a service like Spotify or Pandora is considered a public performance.
- Synchronization: Royalties paid to publishers for use of music in a movie, TV show, or commercial.
What is being sold?
75% of the seller's interest in the publisher's share of sync, mechanical, public performance, and other royalties attributable to the musical compositions in this catalog. See the “Downloads” tab for a full track list.
How does this asset make money?
Every time a song from this catalog is played on the radio or streamed online, you earn royalties. If any of them are covered by another artist, you earn royalties. Every time one of these songs is downloaded, sold, or re-recorded, you earn royalties. Finally, any time the song earns an up-front sync fee for use in a commercial, TV show or movie, you'll earn royalties. Pulse Music makes payments bi-annually and the first distribution you will receive is September 2017.
