Description
Here’s a second chance to earn royalties from this diverse catalog. We recently listed the songwriter’s share of public performance royalties for this catalog (you can review that auction here), and we are now offering the publishing side.
As the winning bidder, you’ll earn from multiple types of royalties — mechanical, public performance, and sync — for the lifetime of the copyright.
LISTING HIGHLIGHTS:
- Life of Rights investment term
- Multiple royalty types, including valuable streaming mechanical earnings
- Multi-Platinum artists with global, mainstream appeal
FINANCIAL HIGHLIGHTS:
Mechanical royalties are not only the top-producing source of earnings for this catalog, at 56%, but also proved the most stable year-over-year compared to other sources. Public performance royalties accounted for 41% of earnings over the last 12 months.
ABOUT THE CATALOG:
The highest-earning title is Sean Paul’s “No Lie” featuring English singer Dua Lipa, with 46% of last year’s earnings. Released in 2016, the song cracked the Top 10 on the UK Singles list and charted in an additional 20+ countries. “No Lie” also happens to be Sean Paul’s most popular song to date on Spotify, with close to 370 million streams.
Right behind is “Tip Toe,” performed by Jason Derulo and hip-hop artist French Montana, with 41% of last year’s income. The single is one of Derulo’s biggest commercial singles to date — charting in 22 separate countries and certified Gold or better in five (including Platinum in the United Kingdom), and touting nearly 286 million streams on Spotify.
This collection also includes “Hey Ma” from Pitbull, Colombian singer J Balvin, and Cuban-American singer Camila Cabello. The single is off The Fate of the Furious soundtrack and was nominated for Best Urban Song at the 2017 Latin Grammys.
Rounding out the catalog are:
- Pitbull’s “Por Favor,” a collaboration with the girl group Fifth Harmony
- “1X1” from Trey Songz
- Chris Brown’s Platinum-certified “Questions”
Key Drivers
Income Mix. The winner of this auction can receive income in various ways:
- Mechanical: Royalties paid to songwriters and publishers when music is sold (think CD or vinyl) but also when music is streamed (streaming mechanicals) “on-demand” (like Spotify).
- Performance: Royalties paid to songwriters when music is performed publicly. Music played over the radio, in a restaurant or bar, or over a service like Spotify or Pandora is considered a public performance.
- Synchronization: Royalties paid to songwriters and publishers for the licensing of a song in music for a movie, TV show, or commercial.
Star Power. Not surprisingly, the global star power within this catalog is an attractive feature. From Pitbull to J. Balvin to Jason Derulo to Camila Cabello — these are multi-Platinum-selling artists with a proven track record of hits, loyal fan bases, and mainstream appeal.
Pitbull has sold over 100 million records worldwide and touts No. 1 singles in 15 different countries. J Balvin has won four Latin Grammy Awards, collaborated with Beyoncé, Pharrell Williams, The Black Eyed Peas, and Cardi B, and still, maintains focus on his Latin fanbase. Camila Cabello has amassed billions of streams on streaming platforms and had the best-selling digital single of 2018 according to the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI).
As these artists continue to gain in popularity and release new songs/albums and tour, this can help boost their back catalog.
Streaming Growth Worldwide. According to IFPI’S Global Music Report 2019, streaming revenues were up 34% in 2018, accounting for nearly half (47%) of total recorded music revenues. By the end of 2018, there were 255 million users of paid subscription accounts globally.
