This publishing catalog of hip-hop and R&B tracks is driven by streaming sources and top artists.

As the winning bidder, you’ll earn from multiple types of royalties — mechanical, public performance, digital, and sync — for the lifetime of the copyright.

The largest income source with 92% of last year’s earnings is digital royalties — publishing royalties which include streaming mechanicals, streaming performance, and downloads. Apple Music and YouTube are the leading platforms for these digital earnings.

You’ll notice a dip in earnings in H2-2019. This is because this catalog was acquired recently by Universal Music Publishing Group, and a change of ownership like this can cause a lag in royalty distribution as digital streaming services and other societies are notified of the change. See note below for more details.

The top-producing song is “D U Down” by Kevin Gates from his 2017 album By Any Means 2, with 29% of last year’s royalties. No stranger to the Billboard 200 chart, Kevin Gates has had multiple mixtapes land in the top 40 and his first studio album landed at No. 2.

Two of the other top-five earning tracks are performed by three-time Grammy-nominee Trey Songz: “All We Do” is off of Songz’ 2014 album, Trigga, which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200; while “Jupiter Love” is from his 2009 album, Ready.

Other notable titles include: “Fly Sh*t Only” and “Lie to Me” from hot hip-hop star Future’s No. 1 album Evol, as well as “Porn Star” from R&B artist August Alsina.

Key Drivers

Dollar Age. This catalog has a Dollar Age of 5.27 years. This means the majority of royalties earned in the last 12 months came from songs that have collected royalties for more than five years. A higher Dollar Age like this suggests stability and longevity. This can help sustain a catalog's earnings moving forward.

Income Mix. The winner of this auction can receive income in various ways:

  • Mechanical: Royalties paid to songwriters and publishers when music is sold (think CD or vinyl) but also when music is streamed (streaming mechanicals) “on-demand” (like Spotify).
  • Digital: Royalties paid to songwriters and artists for digital income reported to the distributor, which includes when music is sold (downloaded), when music is streamed “on-demand” (streaming mechanicals) and when music is performed publicly (streaming performance).
  • Performance: Royalties paid to songwriters when music is performed publicly. Music played over the radio, in a restaurant or bar, or over a service like Spotify or Pandora is considered a public performance.
  • Synchronization: Royalties paid to songwriters and publishers for the licensing of a song in music for a movie, TV show, or commercial.

The original publisher of this catalog was The Bar Music Group through H1-2019. Universal Music Publishing Group (UMPG) recently acquired The Bar Music Group, and as a result, you’ll notice a dip in earnings in H2-2019 due to payment processes adjusting to reflect the new publisher. Going forward, UMPG will collect and distribute royalties from this catalog.
