This asset features publishing royalties generated by songs from the late Swedish DJ/producer Avicii.

The winning bidder will collect three types of royalties: mechanical, public performance, and sync for the next ten years.

Sync royalties drove 43% of last year’s returns. This is a result of a recent sync fee for Avicii’s “Without You,” which was licensed in the 2020 promo trailer for the animated comedy film Scoob!. Mechanical earnings are right behind and brought in 37% of income over the last year.

The top-producing song — “Without You” — anchors this collection with 90% of royalties in the last 12 months.

You’ll notice a spike in international earnings in H2-2019. This is because Sony/ATV made a one-time change in how it distributes foreign earnings (in this case earnings outside of Scandinavia) during that period. Foreign earnings in H2-2019 included 12 months of royalties as opposed to six months. This was to “catch up” and pay foreign earnings on the same schedule as domestic earnings. Going forward, the winning bidder will receive six months of foreign earnings on each biannual statement.

This collection features several tracks from the late Swedish DJ Avicii.

The top-earner is “Without You” from Avicii featuring Swedish vocalist Sandro Cavazza. “Without You” was the lead single on Avicii’s fourth EP Avicii (01) released in August 2017. The album was well-received by critics and fans, charting in 14 countries, notably going No. 1 in Sweden and No. 2 on Billboard’s Top Dance/Electronic Albums.

“Without You” was Avicii's seventh Swedish No. 1 single, reaching No. 1 upon release in 2017 and again after Avicii's death in April 2018. The track also charted well in 28 counties, reaching No. 1 in five countries and was Gold-certified or better in 11 countries. To date, the song has a staggering 727+ million spins on Spotify.

The catalog also includes “Sunset Jesus” and “Gonna Love Ya” from Avicii’s 2015 album Stories.

Key Drivers

Streaming Growth Worldwide. According to IFPI’S Global Music Report 2021, subscription streaming revenues for recorded music increased 18.5% over the previous year. That’s the sixth consecutive year of growth, totaling 443 million paid subscription accounts worldwide. Total streaming (including both paid subscription and advertising-supported) grew 19.9% and reached $13.4 billion, or 62.1% of total global recorded music revenues.

Income Mix. The winner of this auction can receive income in various ways:

  • Mechanical: Royalties paid to songwriters and publishers when music is sold (think CD or vinyl) but also when music is streamed (streaming mechanicals) “on-demand” (like Spotify).
  • Performance: Royalties paid to songwriters when music is performed publicly. Music played over the radio, in a restaurant or bar, or over a service like Spotify or Pandora is considered a public performance.
  • Synchronization: Royalties paid to songwriters and publishers for the licensing of a song in music for a movie, TV show, or commercial.

Please note: Royalties for this asset are reported in Swedish Krona from Sony/ATV Scandinavia. To calculate the payments in U.S. Dollars, Royalty Exchange applied the average historical foreign exchange rate for the distribution month (via

The future royalties will be paid to Royalty Exchange in Swedish Krona converted to U.S. Dollars upon receipt, and then paid in U.S. Dollars to the winning investor. Assets paid in foreign currency entail additional risk as foreign exchange rate changes will cause fluctuations in future cash flows.

Additionally, because the royalty payments originate in Sweden, the purchaser may be subject to withholding taxes, depending on their domicile. You can learn more about foreign tax withholding here. Since all investors’ tax situations are different, please consult your tax advisor if you have questions on foreign withholding.
