Description
Up for auction is a collection of streaming-driven hip-hop tracks from Grammy-winning artists Chris Brown, Ne-Yo and more.
Top-earner for this collection is Chris Brown track “All Back” from the 2x Platinum studio album F.A.M.E. Following its release in 2011, the album immediately skyrocketed to top charts around the globe, landing at No. 1 seat on both the Billboard Top 200 and Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums. The track itself contributes to well over 60% of earnings in the last year and is on the rise.
What’s good news for you is Chris Brown just recently releasing a new album in June 2019 titled Indigo. While the new songs are not included in this auction, new releases can help boost an artist's back catalog. The release of new music draws discovery among first-time listeners and re-engages existing fans.
Additionally, one of this collection’s older works is 2007 release “Say It” from Ne-Yo’s certified-Platinum album Because of You. The track contributes to nearly a third of recent and historic earnings. What’s exciting is, over a decade since it’s release, “Say It” continues to show growth.
This catalog also features works from American-R&B artist K-Michelle and legendary-Motown founder Smokey Robinson as well as others.
Key Drivers
Income Mix. The winner of this auction can receive income from various royalty streams:
-
Mechanical: Royalties paid to songwriters and artists when music is sold (downloaded) but also when music is streamed (streaming mechanicals) “on-demand” like Spotify for example. Click here to learn more about mechanical royalties.
-
Performance: Royalties paid to songwriters when music is performed publicly. Music played over the radio, in a restaurant or bar, or over a service like Spotify or Pandora is considered a public performance.
-
Synchronization: Royalties paid to songwriters and publishers for the licensing of a song in music for a movie, TV show, or commercial.
This catalog’s income mix is driven predominantly by streaming-mechanical earnings, generated from “on-demand” streaming platforms like Spotify, Apple Music and more. Contributing to 76% of earnings in the last 12 months compared to 70% of earnings historically, mechanical royalties are on the rise in recent years.
It is no surprise that streaming-mechanical earnings drive this catalog, contributing to well over half of all mechanical royalties ever collected. As the majority of hip-hop works and artists included in this collection boast high streaming-counts on Spotify – Chris Brown alone claims over 34 million monthly subscribers, Ne-Yo following suit with over 11 million.
Streaming/Hip-Hop. This catalog is a perfect example of two trends: hip-hop and streaming's growth worldwide. According to BuzzAngle's 2018 Year End Report, hip-hop is the most popular genre of music in the U.S. The driver for the increase is streaming. Hip-hop/rap tracks accounted for more than a quarter of all on-demand plays on music streaming services in the US in 2018. As streaming earnings feed into mechanical royalties, well over half of this catalog’s earnings in the last 12 months derived on streaming platforms.
Matching Right
This seller's publisher holds a matching right on any sale of public performance income in this catalog. The publisher will have the opportunity to match the winning bid after this auction closes. If you are the winning bidder, the publisher must first decline their matching right before you will be able to complete your purchase. This process is generally completed within 5–10 business days.
