Up for bid are publishing earnings for “Professional Rapper” from rapper/comedian Lil Dicky’s debut studio album of the same name.

As the winning bidder, you’ll earn three types of royalties for the track: mechanical, public performance, and sync for the next ten years.

Earnings are fairly evenly split for the song between public performance and mechanicals with 54% and 45% respectively over the last year.

You’ll notice a spike in earnings in H1-2019. This is likely the result of catch-up mechanical payments from YouTube, as well as increased public performance royalties from BMI. It’s unlikely other payments like this will occur again, but if it does the winning investor will be entitled to them.

This single song auction features Lil Dicky’s “Professional Rapper.” Released in July 2015 as the title track of his debut studio album, "Professional Rapper" features a guest appearance from legendary hip-hop artist Snoop Dogg. It peaked at No. 1 on the Billboard Comedy Digital Tracks chart and was certified Gold by the RIAA.

The Professional Rapper album was wildly successful, debuting at No. 7 on the Billboard 200 and at No. 1 consecutively on three other charts: Comedy Albums, Rap Albums, and Independent Albums.

To date, the track “Professional Rapper” has over 115 million spins on Spotify, while the video has nearly 205 million views.

Key Drivers

Dollar Age. This catalog has a Dollar Age of 5.74 years. This means the song has earned for nearly six years. A high Dollar Age like this suggests stability and longevity. A catalog containing mature works is something worth noting as an investor, as it can help sustain a catalog's earnings moving forward.

Income Mix. The winner of this auction can receive income in various ways:

  • Mechanical: Royalties paid to songwriters and publishers when music is sold (think CD or vinyl) but also when music is streamed (streaming mechanicals) “on-demand” (like Spotify).
  • Performance: Royalties paid to songwriters when music is performed publicly. Music played over the radio, in a restaurant or bar, or over a service like Spotify or Pandora is considered a public performance.
  • Synchronization: Royalties paid to songwriters and publishers for the licensing of a song in music for a movie, TV show, or commercial.
