Description
Here’s a second chance at this multi-Platinum catalog featuring Trey Songz. We recently listed the songwriter’s share of public performance royalties (you can review that auction here). Investors were excited about that offering, and now we have the publishing side available for bidding.
As the winning bidder, you’ll earn from multiple types of royalties — mechanical, public performance, and sync — for the lifetime of the copyright.
LISTING HIGHLIGHTS:
- Life of Rights investment term
- Multiple royalty types, including valuable streaming mechanical earnings
- Strong supporting catalog, including a 4x Platinum hit
FINANCIAL HIGHLIGHTS:
Mechanical earnings drive this offering with 71% of last year’s income.
Looking at the song income mix, the 4x Platinum “Bottoms Up” grew 2% compared to the prior period, while “Love Faces” demonstrated a rather stable earning history. Both have collected royalties consistently for 10 years.
ABOUT THE CATALOG:
Over the last four quarters, royalties are fairly evenly split between two Trey Songz titles: “Love Faces” and “Bottoms Up” with 36% and 32%, respectively.
"Bottoms Up” was the lead single off Trey Songz fourth studio album, Passion, Pain & Pleasure and features multi-Platinum hip-hop star Nicki Minaj. The single is Trey Songz’ most successful to date, peaking at No. 6 on the Billboard Hot 100 and going on to receive quadruple-Platinum status. To date “Bottoms Up” has over 104 million Spotify spins while the video has over 112 million views. The Gold-certified "Love Faces" is also off Passion, Pain & Pleasure and hit No. 3 on Billboard’s Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs.
Rounding out the leading titles are two additional Trey Songz singles: “Blind” (2010) and “Love Lost” (2009), along with a 2016 release “Can’t Run From Love” from R&B artist Joe.
“Can’t Run From Love” saw significant year-over-year growth as a result of catch-up mechanical payments from the song’s record label BMG. Although this is not expected to be repeated, as the winner of this auction you are entitled to any future one-time payments.
Key Drivers
Income Mix. The winner of this auction can receive income in various ways:
- Mechanical: Royalties paid to songwriters and publishers when music is sold (think CD or vinyl) but also when music is streamed (streaming mechanicals) “on-demand” (like Spotify).
- Performance: Royalties paid to songwriters when music is performed publicly. Music played over the radio, in a restaurant or bar, or over a service like Spotify or Pandora is considered a public performance.
- Synchronization: Royalties paid to songwriters and publishers for the licensing of a song in music for a movie, TV show, or commercial.
Dollar Age. This catalog has a Dollar Age of 9.50 years. This means the majority of royalties earned in the last 12 months came from songs that have collected royalties for more than nine years. A high Dollar Age like this suggests stability and longevity.
"Bottoms Up" was released in 2010 and royalties continue to remain consistent and even grew in the last 12 months. A catalog containing mature works with consistent (and even growing earnings) is something worth noting as an investor. This can help sustain a catalog's earnings moving forward.
Hip-Hop & Streaming. This catalog is a perfect example of two trends: hip-hop and streaming's growth worldwide. According to BuzzAngle's 2019 Year-End Report, hip-hop is the most popular genre of music in the U.S. The driver for the increase is streaming. Six out of the top 10 streamed songs were hip-hop/rap and 52 out of the top 100 most streamed songs were hip-hop/rap.
