Invest in 72% of songwriter royalties from a diverse R&B and pop music catalog that earns royalties from across the globe. The first quarter earnings for 2017 just came out and Q1 2017 alone earned 90% of what all of 2016 earned! In the last 12 months, 72% of the royalties generated $2,324.
The biggest earner in the last 12 months is Grammy-nominated “My Favorite Part of You” by American R&B singer Charlie Wilson. With a career spanning over a decade, Wilson continues to be relevant. His latest album came out in February of this year and he is in the lineup to perform at the 2017 'Grammy Salute to Music Legends' in October.
The catalog's largest contributor, making up 30% of the overall income, is the Canadian hit “Like Magic” performed by R&B artist JRDN. The song reached No. 24 on the Canadian Hot 100, and the music video topped the MuchMusic Countdown, earning it the No. 1 Song Award from Canadian performance rights organization SOCAN.
Adding to the diversity of this catalog are several J-Pop and K-pop songs. “Replay” by the South Korean R&B/pop group SHINee, is the second highest earner in this catalog. “Replay” was a success in Korea, with a Japanese version released in 2011 (certified Gold). “Love, Love, Love” by K-pop band EXO was released in 2014 but recently saw a pick up in earnings this past quarter likely due to EXO's continuing popularity. Two weeks ago the band ranked No. 2 on Billboard's The Social 50 chart which ranks the most popular artists on the leading social networking sites determined by new followers, artist page views and song plays per week.
Also worth noting are recent releases “Last Text” and “By Your Side” by the viral social media star Jacob Sartorius. “Last Text” already has over 12 million YouTube views and “By Your Side” has nearly 5 million views. Both songs came out at the end of last year and collected their first royalties this past quarter. Sartorius' first major-label release, the EP “Left Me Hangin,” will be released this fall and is listed in the New York Time's “Pop and Jazz Fall Preview: 66 Albums, Shows and Festivals.”
1) Diversity. This is a diverse catalog, with income spread across various artists and genres and royalties coming from over 50 countries. This means the success of this catalog isn't just tied to one song or type of music.
2) New albums. Several artists in the catalog recently released new albums or have scheduled album releases. While the new songs are not included in this auction, new releases can help boost an artist's back catalog. The release of new music draws discovery among new fans who are listening to these artists for the first time.
