Description
This offering features various titles from the popular R&B songstress Amerie. In the last 12 months, the top-earning track is Amerie’s most successful single “One Thing” (also called “1 Thing”). Released in 2005, “One Thing” was off Amerie’s second studio album Touch.
“One Thing” was nominated for Grammy’s Best Female R&B Vocal Performance in 2005, and the album Touch also received a nomination for Best Contemporary R&B Album. “One Thing” is certified Platinum, reaching No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs and No. 8 on the mainstream Hot 100.
The single is also featured on the soundtrack for the 2007 romantic comedy Hitch. This means “One Thing” generates royalties every time the film airs on TV. “One Thing” also has an official remix featuring hip-hop artist Eve, which is included in this collection. Interestingly, “One Thing” just ranked at No. 90 on Rolling Stone’s “The 100 Greatest Songs of the Century – So Far” list published in June 2018.
Another Amerie title to note is “Gotta Work,” which brought in the 29% of this catalog’s historic income. The song is off her 2007 album Because I Love It. Finally, there is 2009’s “Why R U,” which peaked at No. 55 on Billboard’s Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart.
Key Drivers
Song Age. This catalog contains music with release dates dating back 13 years. This provides a diverse income mix between new(er) releases and more mature works. Industrywide, “Catalog Songs” (music released more than 18 months ago) and “Deep Catalog” (music released more than 3 years ago) together represent over 60% of music streamed today.
This collection of songs aligns with this trend. The catalog’s highest-earning tracks — “One Thing” and “Gotta Work” — were released in 2005 and 2007, respectively. A catalog containing more mature works is something worth noting as an investor.
New Releases. Amerie is set to drop a new album before the end of 2018. While the new songs are not included in this auction, new releases can help boost an artist's back catalog. The release of new music draws discovery among new fans who are listening to artists for the first time and reengages existing fans.
Hip-Hop and R&B. Hip-hop/R&B overtook rock in 2017 as the most popular genre of music in the U.S. Now, in the first half of 2018, it accounts for 31% of all music consumption. According to the Nielsen report, total consumption of Urban songs (Hip-Hop/Rap and R&B) grew by 18% in both sales and streams.
