Description

With a blend of new and older works rooted in streaming success, this listing features a diverse catalog with songs from a roster of hip-hop heavyweights, including J. Cole, Childish Gambino, Vince Staples, the late Mac Miller, and Wale among many others.

Released in 2017 Vince Staples’ “Big Fish,” contributes to over a third of earnings in the last 12 months. This newer track has collected for less than two years and its earnings are on the rise – up 4% over the previous year. This catalog also features another Vince Staples track, “Nothing Burns Like Cold.”

Contributing to 13% of earnings in the last 12 months is the new release “You Can Cry” from internationally renowned electronic artist Marshmello, featuring hip-hop artist Juicy J. The track has gained over 71 million streams between YouTube and Spotify. It’s worth noting, Marshmello boasts a staggering 37 million monthly listeners on Spotify alone, further supporting the success of the track on streaming services.

An interesting feature of these royalties is that over 70% of income in the last 12 months is spread across five works. The single highest-earning song only accounts for 22% of historic income. This means the catalog’s earnings are not tied to the success of a single track. Other contributors to this diversity include Childish Gambino’s hits “Crawl” and “Palisades,” J. Cole’s “Sparks Will Fly” as well as Earl Sweatshirts’ “Chum” and Mac Miller’s “Time Flies.”

It's also worth noting that this collection includes Lizzo's "Deep" from her 2016 album Coconut Oil. Lizzo released her first Top 10 Billboard hit "Truth Hurts" earlier this year, garnering five Grammy-award nominations! While the new song is not included in this auction, new releases can often help boost an artist's back catalog. As Lizzo continues to gain relevance this can draw discovery among first-time listeners and re-engage existing fans.

Key Drivers

Streaming/Hip-Hop. This catalog is a perfect example of two trends: the growth of hip-hop and streaming. According to BuzzAngle's 2018 Year End Report, hip-hop is the most popular genre of music in the U.S. The driver for the increase is streaming. Hip-hop/rap tracks accounted for more than a quarter of all on-demand plays on music streaming services in the US in 2018. Streaming accounts for 43% of this catalog’s earnings over the last 12 months.

New Releases. Vince Staples recently released a new single “So What?” The music video for the new release doubles as the first episode of Staples’ mysterious web series, The Vince Staples Show. It’s also worth noting Staples’ most recent album FM! ranks at No. 5 on Rolling Stone’s 30 Best Hip-Hop Albums of 2018.

While the new songs are not included in this auction, new releases can help boost an artist's back catalog. The release of new music draws discovery among first-time listeners and re-engages existing fans. As Staples’ web-series continues to gain relevance new fans may discover his back catalog.

International. A majority of this catalog’s earnings come from abroad — 40% of historical earnings. As the winner of this auction, you’ll be entitled to any performance royalties paid by ASCAP and BMI, regardless of when they were earned. As this collection earns primarily from countries outside the United States, it’s important to note that international earnings can often be reported to distributors with limited detail. These international earnings often include income from radio, streaming platforms, and TV/Film.
