This auction offers the opportunity to earn royalties from one of the most recognizable tunes in advertising history: Folgers’ iconic jingle “The Best Part of Wakin’ Up.” The song made its debut in 1984 and has since become inextricably linked with the Folgers brand itself. Over the years, it has been performed by musicians like Randy Travis, Aretha Franklin and Rockapella, and in the styles of nearly every music genre imaginable.

The jingle’s ability to stand the test of time is remarkable. Beginning with the classic commercial “Peter Comes Home For Christmas,” which ran on television for more than a decade, the song has been reimagined through several Folgers-sponsored jingle contests, modernized in a 2019 holiday campaign, and optimized for internet and social media in 2021 with short pandemic-themed clips.

The winner of this auction will earn royalties any time the jingle is used in an advertisement on TV, radio, the internet, or anywhere else.

The song has earned $11,746.52 from performances in the last 12 months. It has earned a total of $38,164.19 since 2011, with more than half ($20,665.94) coming in the last two years.

The Royalties By Performance Year chart on the “Financials” tab clearly shows that national TV advertising drives income for the song. The vast majority of earnings of course come from television, with smaller contributions from streaming and radio.

“The Best Part of Wakin’ Up'' is the commonly-known name of the jingle, but for performance tracking purposes BMI routes most royalties to the composition named “Real Snowy Morning.” You’ll notice that the track list contains several compositions. All of them are tied to the jingle, but often an advertiser will submit the name of the advertising spot to BMI for registration. The winner of this auction will be entitled to royalties for all registrations that use “The Best Part of Wakin’ Up” composition in the future.

Key Drivers

Strong Branding. “The Best Part of Wakin’ Up” slogan and, consequently, the song, is central to the Folgers brand. It has withstood the test of time and given its success, seems likely to live on well into the future.

Advertisement Use. Earnings for the jingle are tied to its use in Folgers’ advertising, particularly on television. The Royalties By Performance Year chart on the “Financials” tab clearly shows that national TV advertising drives income for the song. If Folgers decides to use the jingle less frequently or stops using it altogether, public performance royalties would decrease.

Note About the Last 12 Months’ Earnings & Raw Data

BMI made two adjustment payments to correct for coding errors on the song: one in Nov. 2020 to correct for unpaid royalties in 2019 (reported in the 2020 Q2 payment) and one in the most recent 2021 Q1 payment to correct for unpaid royalties in 2020.

In order to more accurately represent the earnings history, financials are reported as of the performance period (Column A) rather than the payment period (Column B). The last 12 months’ earnings represent income from the 2020 Q2 – 2021 Q1 performance periods.
