Description
This offering features monthly sound recording royalties from the popular post-hardcore group Outline In Color.
Formed in 2010, Outline In Color is a 5-piece alternative metal group that mixes elements of metalcore and electronics, to produce a unique sound. This catalog contains the band's first two independent albums — 2010's self-titled debut album Outline In Color, and its followup Jury of Wolves in 2012 — as well as associated single releases. Collectively, the catalog boasts a Dollar Age of nearly 7 years.
In the last 12 months, this collection earned the majority of its income from streaming — 87% of royalties. Spotify delivers the vast majority of these streaming royalties, accounting for nearly half of all royalties generated in the last year.
Another compelling feature is that income is fairly disbursed across the catalog, with no single song accounting for a large part of last year’s income. “A July of Wolves” is the highest-earning single in this collection, accounting for 11% of royalties. That song’s royalties are increasing, up 9% over the previous year.
Other notable songs include “Another Nightmare,” “No Bleeding On The Carpet,” and “The Chase Scene.”
Key Drivers
Dollar Age This collection of songs has a Dollar Age of 6.96. This means the majority of royalties earned in the last 12 months came from songs that have collected royalties for nearly seven years. A higher Dollar Age like this suggests stability and longevity.
Last year’s highest-earning track — “A Jury Of Wolves” — was released in 2012, and royalties are still being generated. A catalog containing mature works with consistent (and even growing earnings) is something worth noting as an investor. This can help sustain a catalog's earnings moving forward.
Touring and New Releases. In the last two years, Outline In Color the band has been on a worldwide tour, with stops in the United States, Japan, Europe, and Australia. The band has plans for another U.S.-based tour in 2019 and future plans for another Australian tour next year. Outline In Color also just released its fourth studio album in February 2019. The album was well-received and was streamed more than a million times in its first month.
While the new songs are not included in this auction, new albums and active tours can certainly boost an artist's back catalog. The release of new music can lead to discovery among first-time listeners, and re-engage existing fans.
This trend can clearly be seen in the chart below with the release of Outline In Color's album Struggle in March 2016. You'll see the increased engagement from listeners/followers and rising streams after the album's release. You’ll also notice the same pattern occur with the band’s most recent February 2019 album release:
Note: Artist data provided by Spotify.
Looking at Outline In Color's Spotify data, the band's listeners, streams and followers all have steadily increased since 2015. For reference, Spotify classifies “Listeners” as the number of unique persons listening to music, which can indicate a measure of the artist's popularity. “Streams” is the number of times the song is played for at least 30 seconds. “Followers” are listeners who follow the band/artist on Spotify and receive updates/release news on the artist.
