What rights are included?

At stake in this auction are monthly sound recording royalties from the rising hip-hop artist Cam Meekins.

The Boston-based indie rapper came on the scene in 2011 with his mixtape 1993. The next year he was awarded best new artist at the Boston Music Awards. Since then, Cam has released six albums to date and 2015’s December, January, February is included in this catalog.

As the winner of this auction, you will earn income from streams and downloads of the singles and album included in this collection. In the last 12 months, this offering earned the majority of its income from streaming at 97%. Spotify drove income with 76% of total royalties generated in the last year. It’s worth noting Pandora’s earnings grew 36% compared to the previous year.

Income is fairly dispersed across the catalog, with no single song dominating last year’s income. Because the asset's earnings are not tied to the success of a single track, this provides built-in diversification.

The 2017 release “Coffee” is the highest-earning track, accounting for 22% of royalties over the last 12 months. That song’s revenue saw the second-best year-over-year stability amongst the top-earning titles. Other notable singles include “324,” “Holdin On” and “Free.”

Key Drivers

Sound Recordings: Sound recording royalties benefit from streaming disproportionately more than composition-based royalties. If Spotify pays 70-cents of every dollar on music rights, 60-cents of that goes to the sound recording copyright (which the label splits with the artist based on their contract agreement), while the remaining 10-cents goes to the composition copyright.

Sound recording rightsholders see significant benefits as a result. In the last year, the majority of royalties came from streaming services — 97%. This is good news for you as the investor, as it follows the industry macro trend of rising streaming royalties for sound recording copyright rightsholders.

Hip-Hop & Streaming. This catalog is a perfect example of two trends: hip-hop and streaming's growth worldwide. According to BuzzAngle's 2019 Year End Report, hip-hop is the most popular genre of music in the U.S. The driver for the increase is streaming. Six out of the top 10 streamed songs were Hip-Hop/Rap and 52 out of the top 100 most streamed songs were hip-hop/rap. Streaming accounts for 97% of this catalog’s earnings over the last 12 months.

New Releases. Cam Meekins just recently released a new album—The Life of Cam Meekins (Deluxe Version)— on December 17, 2019. While the new songs and album are not included in this auction, new releases can help boost an artist's back catalog. The release of new music draws discovery among first-time listeners and re-engages existing fans.

What is being Sold?

The Seller's interest in all sound recording royalties (except for the artist's share of non-interactive digital performance royalties distributed by SoundExchange) attributable to the sound recordings listed in the Track List noted above.
