Description

Up for auction is a collection of newer releases dating back through 2018. In the last 12 months, over 86% of the earnings derived from streaming platforms.

Streaming drives this catalog’s earnings. On Spotify alone, the top-earning track “Front Desk” from artist Bas’ third-studio album Milky Way claims over 5.4 million spins, contributing to 36% of earnings in the last year. Bas is currently on the esteemed record label Dreamville Records, formed by American hip hop artist J. Cole. The label frequently releases compilation albums which feature a mix of all of the artists on the label, allowing Bas exposure to J. Cole’s current following of over 23 million monthly Spotify followers.

Following closely behind in comparable earnings is the track “Easy” which makes up nearly a third of historical revenue. Released by Nigerian-American R&B group VanJess, the track claims nearly 4 million streams on Spotify. Over 50% of streaming earnings for this work derived from Spotify.

This collection also benefits from additional Bas tracks including “Infinity+2” and “PDA.” Also featured in this collection is “Addicted 2” from both Bas and VanJess.

Key Drivers

Streaming/Hip-Hop. This catalog is a perfect example of two trends: hip-hop and streaming's growth worldwide. According to BuzzAngle's 2018 Year-End Report, hip-hop is the most popular genre of music in the U.S. The driver for the increase is streaming. Hip-hop/rap tracks accounted for more than a quarter of all on-demand plays on music streaming services in the US in 2018. Streaming accounts for 86% of this catalog’s earnings over the last 12 months.

New Releases. Bas' popularity is currently on the rise in association with his appearance on the July 2019 release, Dreamville and J. Cole: Revenge of The Dreamers III. The album itself debuted at No.1 on Billboard's Top 200 Albums chart and remains in the top five three weeks after it's release. While the new songs are not included in this auction, new releases can help boost an artist's back catalog. The release of new music draws discovery among first-time listeners and re-engages existing fans.
