Up for auction is 50% of the writer's share of public performance royalties for theme music used in ABC's flagship news programs: Good Morning America, This Week, and America This Morning. Particularly exciting is that this catalog's earnings have grown 170% in the last four quarters over the four previous quarters. In the last 12 months, this collection of theme music produced $9,054 in earnings.
The recent growth rate can be attributed to the catalog's steadily increasing earnings over the course of 2016. Royalties jumped from just under $600 in Q1 2016 to over $4,000 in Q4 2016. The increase is attributable to the programs Good Morning America and This Week. Combined the two shows account for 85% of total royalties for 2016.
Furthermore, as a program that airs five days/week, it's no surprise that Good Morning America accounts for 55% of the historical earnings. According to the most recent morning show ratings, Good Morning America finished No. 1 in total viewership for the last week of June 2017.
Theme music is the audio played at the outset of any given show. It differs from typical production music, because a theme song plays consistently and more often than a background/transition music. There are many variations of the theme songs in this collection. For example, Good Morning America has opening and closing tracks, as well as varying time lengths. The theme songs will be very recognizable to anyone familiar with the ABC shows. Check out the “Media” tab to listen to samples of a couple songs.
1.) All song's copyright and publishing are owned 100% by ABC News. This provides incentive for them to use the tracks beyond news. For example, the Good Morning America theme was used in the 2009 Jonas Brothers' movie The 3D Concert Experience.
2.) Theme packages for network news are often reused within the same show and brand for many years, such as other ABC programs and news show themes. Every time an episode of Good Morning America or any spin off show airs with music from this catalog, you will earn a royalty.
