Description
Earlier this week, we auctioned the songwriter’s share of public performance royalties for this three-song catalog — that popular offering can be found here. The collection prominently features the single “Valuable Pain” from hot hip-hop artist YoungBoy Never Broke Again.
We are now listing the publishing side. At stake in this auction are three types of royalties: mechanical, public performance, and sync for the collection.
FINANCIAL HIGHLIGHTS:
Royalties are fairly dispersed between mechanical and public performance earnings. Mechanicals are this catalog’s top source at 40% in the last 12 months, with performance right behind at 38% of returns. YouTube royalties round out the top sources with the remaining 22% and consist of revenue generated by the song on the YouTube platform, including ad revenue.
The highest-earning track is “Valuable Pain” at 77%. You’ll notice a spike in royalties in Q3-2019. This is a result of the song’s release at the end of 2018 followed by significant streaming activity.
ABOUT THE CATALOG:
YoungBoy Never Broke Again’s “Valuable Pain” leads this catalog’s earnings. Released in 2018 on the mixtape Realer, the single was a standout on the tape — going Platinum and hitting No. 40 on Billboard’s R&B and Hip-Hop charts.
“Valuable Pain” also cracked into the mainstream Hot 100 at No. 87. To date, the track has nearly 47 million spins on Spotify while the video has an impressive 158+ million views on YouTube.
YoungBoy has a staggering YouTube following — he’s currently sitting at No. 2 on the YouTube Music chart for the United States. In the last 28 days, his videos have globally amassed a combined 192 million views on the platform, with “Valuable Pain” in the No. 13 spot on his “Top Videos” list with nearly 3.28 million views in the same period.
This catalog also includes another YoungBoy track — “Hell and Back” (2016), along with “So Many” from Rod Wave.
Key Drivers
Income Mix. The winner of this auction can receive income in various ways:
- Mechanical: Royalties paid to songwriters and publishers when music is sold (think CD or vinyl) but also when music is streamed “on-demand” (like Spotify).
- Performance: Royalties paid to songwriters when music is performed publicly. Music played over the radio, in a restaurant or bar, or over a service like Spotify or Pandora is considered a public performance.
- Synchronization: Royalties paid to songwriters and publishers for the licensing of a song in music for a movie, TV show, or commercial.
Hip-Hop & Streaming. Hip-Hop/Streaming. This catalog is a perfect example of two trends: hip-hop and streaming's growth worldwide. According to BuzzAngle's 2019 Year End Report, hip-hop is the most popular genre of music in the U.S. The driver for the increase is streaming. Six out of the top 10 streamed songs were hip-hop/rap and 52 out of the top 100 most streamed songs were hip-hop/rap.
New Release. YoungBoy Never Broke Again recently released a new single on June 18, 2020. While the new song is not included in this auction, new releases can help boost an artist's back catalog. The release of new music draws discovery among first-time listeners and re-engages existing fans.
